We carry a vast Protestant support ... is this a crime?

WGS, here are a couple of quotes from Stewarty's post. Maybe the answer could lie in these. Maybe it's a loose, lazy connection for some ...

"Bissett agreed when asked if he thought this was remarkable and went on to say: 'There's a cultural Protestantism by which people mean, generally, "I'm a Rangers supporter, or I'm a unionist, or I went to Sunday school"."

"In Scotland, certain forms of tribalism are often reinforcing and this makes them more potent and stubborn. Football, religious and cultural allegiances overlap to a significant extent and this blend can find negative expression in what is popularly referred to as sectarianism."

Personally I couldn't care less whether our support is protestant, catholic, buddhist or voodoo.

As I said earlier I believe(unconfirmed) that more catholics now support Rangers than protestants support Celtic.

If that were the case I can imagine Kearney & co would be heading towards total meltdown
