Ramsdens Cup Second Round Draw: Rangers v Berwick

Day at Ibrox adds up to a lucrative cup draw for Berwick

The practice of a cup draw has at its heart the attentive pursuit of numbers.

Each club is allocated a figure, with all of those then systematically plucked from a bowl and read allowed until all ties are decided, but the focus was more acute during the draw for the Ramsdens Cup second round yesterday, with most clubs willing their number to be added to that of Rangers.

The sum total is a good deal more money; Berwick Rangers this time left celebrating a plum tie at Ibrox. The match will take place on August 20 or 21 and brings the promise of a lucrative share of the gate money, since these are shared between clubs in cup competitions.

It was a fact not lost on Jimmy Crease, the former Berwick manager and now director at the club, when he was informed of the draw yesterday. Nor did it escape the notice of those in his immediate vicinity, since he allowed himself a yelp of delight as he made his way through a shopping centre. "We faced Rangers on the final day of last season when they were presented with the Third Division trophy. There were 52,048 fans there that day – and we supplied the 48 – but of course never picked up a penny for it," said Crease.

"A share in a 40,000 crowd would mean a lot to Berwick. We had Celtic in the Scottish Cup on TV recently and obviously the two games against Rangers last season and we have invested it well. We have used the money to improve our ground and facilities. Hopefully the manager Ian Little's budget will see some of this as well."

The value of a draw at home to local rivals Raith Rovers was also not lost on Dunfermline Athletic, who had earlier succeeded in convincing creditors to agree to a CVA as the club worked its way out of administration. "If we could have picked a tie to mark the CVA we could not have picked a better one," said Craig Dargo, the Dunfermline player-coach. "If the fans turn out as they did in the league then it should be a cracker."

Draw:

North/East Section Formartine United v Elgin City, Dundee v Forfar Athletic, Peterhead v Stenhousemuir, Dunfermline Athletic v Raith Rovers.
