Richard Wilson - 'Miles to go' but McCoist confident of moving on

Don't disagree with any of your reply calscot. I should have been clearer in saying I was playing devil's advocate in some of the points made.

It's a Pavlovian response that seems to happen when discussing the squad, it's size and our wage bill. I've consistently argued that we are playing a half and half strategy. We can't afford just to get by with players on no more that's £500-£1000 pw because this increases the risk that we don't win promotion considerably, and to a level that no one would find acceptable.

At the same time as securing players that will ensure we gain promotion easily, we also need to invest in developing a squad that will allow is to at least compete on terms with premiership teams when we return. If we don't, and merely scrape through the divisions, it will be a very large gap in quality to bridge, and one that will take perhaps a couple of years to fix.

If we did go down that route, i can picture the transfer negotiations for every player we try and sign. The selling club, knowing we have a wad of cash will drive up the price and the self-same moaners about overpaying players in the lower leagues will bemoan the inflated costs of rebuilding the team.

It's a classic no-win scenario.
