Anti-sectarian football laws fear as fans complain

Recommended Posts

I believe that Andy's ironic take is pretty close to reality.

Although politicians are the visible face of government policy, they rarely act of their own free will.

They are usually pushed and prodded by pressure groups. Pressure can be applied in many ways - most often not particularly wholesome or necessarily in the interest of the general public.

26th's perspective above is probably close, but perhaps focuses on the politicians instead of who was pulling the strings.

By the way 26th, who was Rose meeting with at Glasgow University? That would be interesting.

The meeting was already planned as one of the on going series, but ra Sellik and subsequently the rc church flagged up their unwillingness to attend at the previous meet. Their perspective was that the 'old firm shame game' was a misnomer, it was a Rangers shame game. The process had temporarily hit the buffers. However, the booking was continued and an interested parties meet was held instead. I have heard all sorts of names in attendance that evening including Joan McAlpine, Jeanette Findlay, Tom Devine, Gerry Dunbar, .......... etc. Cunningham attended to listen, and the footage where she blurted out the quote was broadcast on Newsnict Scotland. It was never broadcast again and the speculation fingered Diarmid O'Hara, Newsnich Editor and former SNP Spokesman on Sport.

Joan McAlpine is the First Minister's main speech writer, she is a former Deputy Editor of the Herald and currently a south of Scotland list MSP. She was the conduit for those interested parties attending that evening. Joan has an award winning blog, 'Go Lassie go'; several years past it contained a few insights that have since been removed, after entering the Scottish Parliament eg her most emotional moment was attending Bobby Sands funeral.

The main characters in this piece of theatre are the current SNP Government. Ten years ago, it would have been the Labour Party. The lever is the same then and now; our green'n'grey happy hoopsters are NEVER afraid to exact their considerable political leverage.

Did any of you catch the massive 12,000+ word interview which the Shitzine guy Muirhead got out of Superintendent Stephen McAllister, the Head of FoCUS back in June?

I'd post it, but it would require 6 posts to fit in the character count of the interview. 12179 words, 66778 characters.

Thanks 26th.

The individuals mentioned, and Rose's subsequent comment to Newsnight, leave no doubt in my mind as to the agenda of that meeting.

Rangers fan banned over 'Nazi' salute at Celtic under-17s final

A Rangers fan has been banned from football after making ‘Nazi’ salutes towards Celtic fans at an under-17s game.

Kevin Brannigan was seen and filmed by police making the salute towards Celtic fans at the Glasgow Cup tournament in April this year.

The 28-year-old, of Glasgow, made the salutes in the area segregating the fans during the match at Firhill Stadium, the home ground of Partick Thistle.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court on Wednesday, Brannigan was given a two-year football banning order for the offence.

Stephen Ferguson, football liaison prosecutor in the west for the Crown, said: "Brannigan’s actions are unacceptable in any environment but the symbolism of the gesture at a sporting event, which could incite disorder, and in front of school children and families is particularly offensive."

Three fans were arrested during the tie, which was attended by around 6000 on April 29. Seats at the ground were damaged and flares were thrown onto the pitch while the match took place.

Two further arrests were made by police after reviewing footage from the match.
