As has been explained on that site, it is unfair to include domestic cup/European games. For example, how could a defeat by Real Madrid be comparable to a win over Rochdale? If managers should be examined on ALL games, why do you only use the win % stats to make your point? As I said, Eck has the worst win ratio in their history. Zappa 0 Posted May 31, 2014 Share Posted May 31, 2014 I didn't particularly rate him as a manager, but he did give us a roller-coaster ride with some very memorable highs. I think we need to be fair about the season when he came in and took over from Dick Advocaat because when Eck took over mid-December we had already dropped quite a lot of points including two defeats to Celtic, so winning the league was already highly unlikely, especially when that lot had Larsson on fire. In fact, when Eck took over we had already dropped more points than Celtic ended up dropping in the whole season. Nonetheless, the season did give us a memorable Cup double including the 3-2 Scottish Cup final win over that lot, so it certainly wasn't a disaster by any means. Then there's the highs of winning the treble the following season which was actually Eck's first full season. Now, I don't care what anyone says about him having inherited a great team from Advocaat because managers can only use what they have at their disposal and plenty of great football teams throughout history with world class players and world class managers have won sweet Fanny Adams despite having the best team and manager on paper. Winning a domestic treble is a massive achievement for any team even if they play in a one team league, so anyone trying to say or suggest that our treble in 02/03 wasn't a great achievement is talking rubbish. Things did then start going downhill for Eck, but without making excuses for him, let's not forget that he was forced to cut the costs of the playing squad due to the mess David Murray had made of the Club's finances. In the 03/04 season Eck only spent just over a million quid on players while shipping out over £10 million's worth from his 1st pick squad including the sales of Ferguson and Amo to Blackburn and McCann to Southampton. That's also the season he lost Numan and Caniggia, so while it's easy to look at the stats for results, it's only fair to look at the circumstances too and that season without silverware was one of quite big changes. Even just losing a top class midfielder like Ferguson who was arguably at the peak of his career and had scored 18 goals in our treble winning season the year before was quite a big loss to Eck's squad and it showed in our results big time. The following season (04/05) saw more downsizing. We lost a truck load of players in the summer including some great players like Mols, the de Boers and Arteta followed by the departures of Moore and Boumsong mid-season, but a couple of good signings like Prso, Novo & big Marv plus bringing back Ferguson mid-season saw Eck leading us to a historic and dramatic double via the unforgettable helicopter Sunday! Eck's final season was a strange one and a bit of a tale of two halfs in more than one way because the first half of the league season was one of the worst I can ever remember with us dropping almost 30 points and completely blowing the league by the turn of the year. Strangely though, during that same period we only suffered a single loss in the Champions League and reached the last 16 for the first time where even there we didn't actually get beaten by Villarreal and only went out on away goals. So it was a good season in Europe, but a dismal one domestically. When you think about Eck's final season overall, it's pretty clear that our poor August to December league results were somehow as a direct consequence of the European campaign and the manager has to shoulder the majority or certainly a large portion of the blame for that. He did turn it around in the league after the new year and only dropped maybe about 10 or 12 points on the run-in compared to the 25 to 30 points we had dropped before the turn of the year, but it was just too little, too late to even grab 2nd spot. The relatively successful European campaign had inadvertently destroyed our domestic season and that's a trap which PLG walked straight into himself the following season; concentrating on Europe to the detriment of our domestic campaign. The treble in 2003 was fantastic, over 100 points IIRC, and we scored over 100 goals with 3 players getting over 20 each, but the Zizkov result was embarrassing. From then on we were a selling club as Murray gave up on us and tried to get the debt down, and it was no coincidence that we suffered as a result. He remarkably managed to get some journeymen (big marv for example) and turn them into champions in 2005 against a very expensive bheast side managed by the greatest ever manager ever seen, ever! Let's not forget also he is the only Rangers manager to take us through the group stages of the CL into knockout, the draw in Porto being the highlight and we were unlucky in Villarreal who could beat us in 2 attempts and went onto lose unluckily in the SF. The 05-06 season was total torture, a very long run of games (12 was it) without a win was the real low point, and coming 3rd in a two team league rightly resulted in jotters being issued. Overall his tenure of 4.5 years with two titles and a further 5 cups was a good effort during a period of downsizing against a good bheast side full of expensive players. We actually tied on points and just narrowly won the league on goal difference did we not? Great season anyway and we played some cracking teams in the pre-season friendlies that year. River Plate, Santos, Milan & Leads to name a few.
