About 9 months ago all the talk on here was about who should partner him in defence as he was the one who looked good in the 2nd half of last season. And to be fair to his critics, we've had a pretty poor bunch of Centre backs and at times Rod only looked the best of a bad lot. At every point we've wished for a new defender that was a class above what we had and who would drag one of our mediocre players up a level while dominating the defence themselves. We now doing that with Svensson but that doesn't mean we think he's any good. juffery 0 Posted January 11, 2007 Share Posted January 11, 2007 Part of the problem is that we've been spoiled by the quality we've had in the past. Looking back at the centre backs that I can remember Gough, Butcher, Bomber, Roberts, Hendry, Amoruso have all been commanding, dominant and leaders regardless of their faults. They have all played with Rangers at their hearts and been willing to put their bodies in the line to help rangers get places. Unfortunately there aren't that many of these players about now and I also think the quality that they play against week in week out is now higher. Virtually every team in the SPL has a striker that can be seen as a danger man, whereas before that wasn't the case. I don't think it is just about spending millions on someone who is a technically good defender, it is more about getting a defender who has the personality that can match those I mentioned. Someone like Russell Anderson maybe isn't the strongest physically, but I think he has the personality to lead a defence. Equally, Andy Webster has the height and strength but I don't see him as the lead defender but more the back-up, the Craig Moore to Amoruso. We also need to think about strenghtening right back.
