RANGERS under-20s got their pre-season action off to the perfect start with a comfortable win over Dumbarton at Murray Park.

Barring the opening 15 minutes, the vast majority of the action was played in the visitors’ half, and 20s boss Ian Durrant will have been delighted with both the intensity and quality of play displayed throughout.

It was Dumbarton though that created the first opportunity of the match as striker Andrew Biddulph created space for himself on the edge of the area but his shot trundled harmlessly by Robby McCrorie’s right-hand post.

That was to be as good as it got for the Sons in an attacking sense as Rangers took full control of proceedings.

Darren Ramsay was first to threaten as he rattled the underside of the crossbar after bursting into the area and jinking from his right to his left foot before unleashing his rasping shot.

Ross Lyon then saw a speculative 30-yard drive find the roof of the net before Rangers’ triallist should have opened the scoring as he got on the end of a Ross McCrorie cross but he turned his effort wide.

The triallist then missed an even better chance less than a minute later as he was played in by Ross Lyon, but the angle for a shot was against him and he fired over the bar with only the goalkeeper to beat.

But the increasing pressure told soon on Dumbarton as Scott Roberts gave the Light Blues the lead.

Good interplay between Ramsay and the triallist saw Roberts played-in, and he found space in the area before firing high beyond ‘keeper Jamie Ewings.

Ramsay was involved again as he fed in Ross McCrorie out on the right, but his fierce effort stung Ewings’ palms and dropped behind for a corner as Rangers went into the interval with a 1-0 lead.

Ian Durrant made five changes at half time with Jamie Brandon, David Brownlie, Danny Stoney, Dylan Dykes and Craig Halkett replacing Luca Gasparotto, Lewis White, Max Ashmore, Tom Lang and the triallist.

The second half began as the first had ended with Rangers well on top, and it wasn’t long before they held a 2-0 lead.

The ball dropped to Danny Stoney just inside the area, and he unleashed a powerful shot which sailed into the top corner and gave Ewings absolutely no chance whatsoever.

Soon after, it was three thanks to some quick-thinking from Darren Ramsay.

Jamie Brandon did exceptionally well to win a free-kick to the right of the box after a charging run forward, but before Dumbarton could get themselves set up defensively, Ramsay pinged the ball into the back of the net.

A number of the players substituted at half-time began to re-enter the pitch as the half wore on, and the triallist was involved in the creation of the fourth goal.

He drove into the penalty area before being tripped, and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a spot-kick.

Up-stepped Dylan Dykes to take it, and he slotted the ball low to Ewings’ left to put the shine on what was a more than decent afternoon’s work for Rangers.

They move on to play Tynecastle at Murray Park on Tuesday.
