The Warburton way is a winning formula for Rangers

Recommended Posts

THE team that eats together, wins together.

It is on the field in front of the fans that he is determined to send home happy where the results of Mark Warburton’s methods are coming to fruition as Rangers have recorded eight successive wins this season.

But it is at Murray Park where the building blocks have been put in place as he has transformed the Light Blues squad in terms of personnel and mentality.

Warburton inherited a group that had failed on the park and been criticised off it as Rangers fell some way short last season.

But he has rejuvenated those that remained after a campaign to forget at Ibrox and has been rewarded with fine performances from players who had points to prove.

The combination of those in situ stars and the array of talent the 52-year-old brought to the club has proven a potent one so far for Rangers as they have made a stunning start this term.

Warburton has a team playing an attractive, incisive brand of football and a squad hungry for success as he looks to lead Rangers to the Championship title.

It may only have been a few weeks since the Warburton blueprint was first laid out, but the results speak for themselves as they go in search of nine-in-a-row at home to Raith Rovers tomorrow.

“I can’t talk highly enough of the lads - Lee Wallace, Kenny Miller, Dean Shiels, Nicky Law - all of them have been outstanding,” Warburton said.

“The way the young guys – Gedion (Zelalem) is 18, Nathan (Oduwa) is 19 and Dominic Ball has just turned 20 - have been welcomed is testament to the older players.

“I’ve mentioned how they perform day in, day out, speaking to the younger players and helping them and where they sit at the lunch table.

“We don’t want all the senior pros at one end and the new ones at the other, they don’t the mingle in and the whole environment is conducive to those guys developing.

“There is no residual left-over, so to speak, from last year.

“I do it to make sure there are no cliques. It’s one dressing room, it’s our environment where we work every day.

“Leave it tidy, leave it clean and respectful, it’s common courtesy and we make sure they are installed.

“There is a code of conduct for the players and they get fined if there are water bottles or tops left out.

“It’s our environment and hopefully it conducive to them being better players.”

The Ibrox crowd have bought into the Warburton way as they have seen their side score 30 goals in eight matches and turn on the style every time they have stepped onto the pitch so far this season.

The player recruitment and tactical switches have transformed Rangers dramatically in a short space of time and Warburton’s side already look like they will take some catching in the Championship title race.

The man management skills of the former Brentford boss have also been key, however, as he has focused on the group and stressed the importance of the team mentality.

Warburton said: "Everyone has to play their part. If you imagine you come here every day and you train hard morning and every afternoon.

“You do your gym work, you eat well, you sleep well. And it comes to Friday and you are away to Queen of the South and you're not on the team coach.

“The following week, you work and train hard again and you're not on the coach. I'm not sure how you keep that person happy.

“I hear people saying well it's all about being good pros. That’s not being a footballer, that's just using this place as a health club.

“You've got to give them a pathway to the first team. Why have an Academy? Say we have a couple of injuries, we will dip into the Academy.

“Barrie McKay, Tom Walsh, Ryan Hardie, Jordan Thompson, Fraser Aird... all these guys have come from the Academy and they are around the first team and contributing.

“Why have a big squad with disillusioned players who never get a sniff of the first team?"

Having overhauled his squad in the first few weeks of his Rangers reign, Warburton was content to watch on as the transfer window closed on Tuesday night.

There was no last-minute move to strengthen once again from Warburton, the Ibrox boss satisfied with what he has at his disposal and confident he has more than enough to achieve what needs to be achieved in the coming months.

Should problems arise, he is happy to look within for the answers and give those at Murray Park a chance to prove their worth.

Warburton said: "We spoke about this on the first day. All of the boys I have mentioned have trained with the first team and all came through the Academy so why not use them?

“Craig (Mulholland) and the staff have done a great job and they are trying to get the boys to make the transition from youth team performer to the first team - that's their job.

“You have to give them that window. If they don't get that chance, there is no point having an Academy."

Waghorn delight at Rangers' winning run

MARTYN WAGHORN is delighted at a dream start to the campaign for himself and Rangers as Mark Warburton’s side bid for nine-in-a-row under the new Ibrox boss.

The Light Blues continued their impressive run of form with a 5-1 win over Queen of the South last weekend and host Raith Rovers on Championship duty tomorrow afternoon.

Waghorn bagged a brace at Palmerston as two strikes from twelve yards took his tally for the campaign to six goals from eight outings.

The striker has caught the eye at the head of the Gers’ attacking line following his arrival from Wigan Athletic earlier this summer.

And he is determined to keep picking up the points as Warburton’s side look to extend their advantage at the top of the Championship standings in the coming weeks.

“It was nice [to score]. A double penalty, I will take that. They all count,” he told RangersTV.

“It is important that we are winning and whether it is from a penalty or open play, I don’t mind.

“It is the three points and winning and keeping the momentum going.

“It is a new club for me, there are a lot of new players that have come in and sometimes it takes a while to adapt and settle in.

“But it is a great setup, the gaffer, Davie and all the boys want to play football. We are young, hungry and really ambitious and we want to get back to where Rangers want to be.

“We are all driven, we all know what we want and I think that is contributing to how we are playing.

“It has been incredible really for the amount of changes and the contrast from last year, from what I have heard, to this opening period of the season.

“It is the wins, the feel good factor in the way we are playing and how we are playing and it all contributes to a successful team.”

Warburton insists latest twists in Ibrox saga won't derail Rangers on the park

MARK WARBURTON is confident the latest off-field drama surrounding Rangers won’t affect his players on the park this term.

Former Ibrox chairman Craig Whyte and ex chief executive Charles Green appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court this week and were charged with serious organised crime offences.

Paul Clark and David Whitehouse of Duff and Phelps have also been charged and, like Whyte and Green, have been released on bail.

The arrests are the latest chapter in the lengthy Rangers saga but the picture is far clearer for supporters following the regime change in March and appointment of Warburton and David Weir as the Gers’ management team in June.

And the 52-year-old is determined to keep the focus on matters on the field and give the Light Blue legions plenty more to cheer this season.

Warburton said: “I don’t see why that should be the case. I think football fans want to follow their football club and look at how their team performs. They want to enjoy the match day and the build-up and get value for money.

“If we are giving them that, that’s our job. If they enjoy what they see, see a real work ethic from the players and the results are going our way, that should be the overriding factor.

“It’s not a case of how good the fans have got it now. We have a long way to go.

“It is about the players and the supporters can see they are committed and giving their best.

“When we went to Airdrie, there were more than 7000 there. There were banks of Rangers fans at Queen of the South on Sunday.

“With 50,000 at Ibrox, that is our responsibility. We use that message every week with the players, but the right players enjoy that responsibility. The wrong players drown under it.”

The Rangers story has been a lengthy and complicated one as fans have been left to fear for the future of their club.

Having now seen Warburton’s side win their first eight games this term, there is a renewed optimism of a bright future once again at Ibrox.

And the former Brentford boss is determined to play his part in the recovery after watching the Gers’ trials and tribulations from afar.

Warburton said: “You couldn’t fail to see it. Every football fan up and down the country knew what was going on because of the size of Glasgow Rangers.

“We watched it on TV and it was heartbreaking to see, really, some of it. Our job as a football department is to come in now and try to play the right kind of attractive football that the fans enjoy. If we do that, we have made some strides in the right direction.

“My focus is the football department. I am not ignoring a very important question, but it has to be.

“If we lose focus and concentration, the team are weakened by that. All the staff have to focus on being best prepared.

“Right now, it is about Raith and nothing can distract us from that.”

I was certainly one who shouted for Warburton to be appointed the second he was available after what he did at Brentford, I knew he was good but I couldn't imagine he would be this good. Im not just talking about 8 victories but he is putting in a philosophy footballing structure that we have been crying out for which will set us up for at least a decade if the men steering the ship keep it right.

It just goes to show you don't need a 'job for boys' man in place and an outsider with no links to the club can succeed. Ok Weir is with him but I would only class Weir as an ex player (true professional) and not exactly 'one of the boys'. Its the same as class ex players like Laudrup and Wilkins, they could have had a role within the club and would have concentrated on the footballing side.

With hindsight we will look back at last seasons failure in the play offs as a real gift!!! That might sound bizarre but it was one step back to take 2 giant strides forward.

I can only see things getting better this season....

That song is class :D

I am maybe an old fuddy duddy but i would have preferred "He said no thanks to that"instead of the swear word. Swearing is not something I would connect to him and I find it unnecessary in this case as no thanks actually fits in better.
