I think momentum carried the guy over the line. I also think he held off coming back on to the field because he would have been offside.

 

He's not much of a footballer if he couldn't stop at that relative trot of a speed. The Rangers defender just to the right of him was moving at exactly the same pace and immediately stopped and turned to his right when the ball went over there. He could have stopped if he wanted to. He made a decision to trot off the field.

 

And that's the be all and end all of it. We can't have players just deliberately trotting off the field and especially so in moments of frantic goalmouth action then just stepping back on when they feel like it. That was a great piece of officiating by the linesman concerned.

probably the offence would have been re entering the field of play without the referee's permission

 

Except it wasn't, he was flagged as offside.

 

Hearts had earlier netted through Don Cowie, but the midfielder was flagged offside.
