'DISAPPOINTING' Aberdeen chief George Yule finds lower attendances ‘puzzling’ and says fans must back the team at Pittodrie

 

The Dons finished second in the league and reached both cup finals but rank fifth when it comes to home attendances and season ticket sales

 

ABERDEEN chief George Yule has admitted it is “puzzling” to find the club’s attendances are dropping.

 

The Dons*enjoyed a great season, finishing second in the league and reaching both domestic cup finals.

 

But when it comes to home attendances and season ticket sales, the Pittodrie club are only the fifth-highest in Scotland, and lag behind Hearts and Hibs.

 

And year-on-year, the average size of the home crowd fell by more than 1,000.

 

Pittodrie vice-chairman Yule told the Evening Express: “It was puzzling as well as disappointing and we’ve tried hard to work it out.

 

“I accept that we won nothing but when you look at the financial gulf that exists in the Scottish game it’s commendable what the manager and his players achieved.“In any other season, if you take Celtic out of the equation, we would be the ones getting all the praise.

 

“But the facts show we have the second best side but are at fifth spot when it comes to average attendances and season ticket sales.“We accept we will never get to the levels Celtic and Rangers are at – but we are also a long way behind the fourth club (Hibs).

 

“Finding ourselves about 3,000 behind them is disappointing.“Hibs are on a bit of a roll after winning the Scottish Cup and the Championship but we had hoped doing as well as we did in the top league would see us benefit as well.”

 

Aberdeen sold out their ticket allocation for the Scottish Cup final against Celtic.

 

But with the departure of players such as Ryan Jack and Niall McGinn, as well as reports linking Jonny Hayes to Celtic, the Dons face a transitional period.

 

And Yule has urged the Dons faithful to match their expectations for success by backing the Derek McInnes’ men at home.

 

He added: “We saw at the Scottish Cup final that there are people capable of backing the club when they want to.“But we could do with a bit more of that type of support at Pittodrie as well.“There’s high expectations for this club but they need to be matched by the level of backing we receive from the supporters.”

Maybe people lost interest in the league campaign as you were ending up 30 points behind the Yahoos? You and your lot were expected to be the Yahoos prime challengers in Rangers' absence, and in our first season back, you only managed to keep us some 9 points behind you. Perhaps the focus was a little off this time around? That said, watching your fans, it seemed to be all they cared about.

Haw George, please allow me to provide my conclusion to an 'objective appreciation' of your club.

 

Pittodrie is a TOILET.

 

Improve the venue and more folks might attend.

Because they're shyte? Nobody says we had a great season or anything like it yet with just a few weeks of the season remaining we could have finished second ahead of them. We also beat them twice and outplayed them in the game they won at home. If they think that's a 'great' season they better start filing it in the memory drawer because that's as good as it's going to get for a very long time.

 

I foresee them struggling to be top 5 next season.
