dB, ten years ago - five, three even- I was a better centre half than I am now.

 

Alves was expected to organise the defence with a steely presence and put an end to the frequent loss of stupid goals. Has he done that?

I thought the new Dutch saying about the footballing past was 'Will we ever see their likes again' and the eternal Scottish answer, 'Naw'.

Yes, you were obviously completely right. A player of his past playing as poorly as this in this league is embarrassing. Any half decent foreign internationalist should breeze this league.

I presumed that the opportunity to play in his last World cup might have been enough to get some really decent performances, out of him.

 

He obviously didn't want it that bad.
