Just reading that David Wilkie died this evening aged 70

Strange that Aberdeen should produce two world class swimmers in quick succession to one another.

Some papers and television pundits call players legends after one decent season but these blokes were special.

Smith - apart from Henderson best right winger I ever saw. Matured into a style of play ahead of his time in the same way as Cooper.

Johnstone - only saw him second time round at Hibs. Mesmerist. Regret I never saw the Five together.

Reilly - was there a better scorer of goals? McCoist.

Turnbull - dynamo.

Ormond - auld widden legs. But he outlasted the rest.

Pat Stanton must be contender for Hibs’ best ever. He was so good I overlook the blip at the end of his career.

Outside of Rangers a hero in my city (for the blue half) is Gil Merrick.

From Sparkhill, played over 700 games for the Blues and played for England. He then managed City to their first major trophy against Villa in the League Cup.

Also managed a win in the San Siro in 60/61 v Inter.

You won't get that again in football - unless Tyrick Mitchell for Palace leads them to a League Cup win against Millwall in 20 years time.

Talking mesmerist above reminded me of Willie Hamilton, Hearts then Hibs.

Two I would have loved at Rangers Hamilton and Neil Martin

I remember newsreel footage of the FA Cup semi at Hillsborough. Len Shackleton for Sunderland wrecked the Blues’ outfield defence but Merrick kept them out. Unfortunately for Brum he couldn’t do the same to Bobby Johnstone in the Final.
