TV cameras absent as club tries to boost crowd by snubbing BBC bid

TONIGHT'S Rangers v Kaunas match will not be shown live on television, after the Ibrox club rejected a bid from BBC Scotland to screen the Champions League second qualifying round first-leg tie.

It is understood that Rangers were keen to offer an incentive for supporters to attend the game ââ?¬â?? the team's first competitive match of the season ââ?¬â?? in greater numbers.

Last season, BBC Scotland screened both home legs of Rangers' qualifying campa

ign for the Champions League, which included the Ibrox matches against Zeta and Red Star Belgrade ââ?¬â?? watched by crowds of 33,000 and 35,364 respectively.

However, tonight's match has been advertised on the club's official website as an attendance-only fixture with the club eager to entice fans into the ground in support of the team.

A crowd of 45,974 attended the last game between the two sides at the same stage of the competition eight years ago, and the club are looking for similar backing tonight.

Last year, Walter Smith acknowledged the crowd at Ibrox as a driving force in the team's run to the Uefa Cup final, which, ironically, came about after the club failed to match Celtic's achievement in reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League.

The Ibrox club, however, made up some of the income lost by failure to qualify for the last 16 of Uefa's blue-riband tournament with television money garnered from their success in the Uefa Cup.

Rangers brought in a further Ã?£4.1million from their exploits in the European governing body's second-tier tournament ââ?¬â?? losing the final to Zenit St Petersburg at the City of Manchester Stadium in May.

Their Champions League group stage television rights had already added £7.7million to the Ibrox coffers, but reaching the final just lifted them just above Celtic in the earnings table.

BBC Scotland understood the decision of the club and hopes to screen future European matches, with a bid for the second leg in Lithuania next week still under consideration.

Under the terms of the new Champions League television deal which were negotiated for the 2009-2010 season, the final qualifying round matches will be included as part of the broadcasting rights.

Earlier this year, ITV retained the rights to show Champions League matches as part of a deal for the 2009-2012 seasons, with the channel broadcasting the first pick of Wednesday night matches from August 2009.

Sky Sports will continue to show coverage of live matches and highlights on a Tuesday, plus matches other than the first choice on Wednesday evenings.

Cough! Cough!
