  5. Back in the 1980's John Greig took on Bobby Dinnie from Possil YM to run an official Rangers Boys Club. They played in the Scottish Amatuer Youth League with the likes of Celtic Boys Club, Eastercraigs, Fir Park Boys Club etc. At its peak I think there were three age groups, one particular group had a front three of Gary McSwegan, John Spencer and Eoin Jess (although Jess coming from Portsoy didn't come down every week). It ended around 1988 by which time it was only under 16's, from that final year Rangers signed Neil Murray, Craig Flannigan and David Hagen. Before the training facility opened there was a period where Rangers played on a Sunday at Lochburn Park, home of Maryhill Juniors. It alternated with 15's one week and 16's the next. Michael Stewart of Sportscene fame was a mainstay in midfield before choosing Man Utd over Rangers. Immediately before moving to Murray Park Rangers used Glasgow Science Park for their Sunday youth fixtures, teams that included the likes of Stephen Hughes and Chris Burke

  20. Unfortunately the fixtures this weekend clashed with my weekend trip to Wetherby races so I didn't make any of the games. What I do know is that Rangers fielded pretty much their strongest U17 side, only injured Stephen Kelly was missing. The two players who have recently featured at 20's both started as did three U16's. The league rules allow an U18 goalkeeper and one U18 outfield player, Celtic usually use this option and I believe they did today, Rangers rarely play any overage players in this league. I believe the U15's came back from 3-0 down, against a team that included superstar Karamoko Dembele (who is an U14) Great result for the U14's, they are a very small team physically and have struggled to win games this season, Celtic are a very big team at this age group and would have had a big physical advantage. So it was a win for brain over brawn. 13's have won every game I have watched comfortably this season and were only pegged back with the last kick of the game.
