If we don't win, draw or lose, Gerrard will "get a doing"? -

Wright, Roooofe and Sakala could be interesting. It could be quite fluid, with one up top and two behind, or even two up top with one behind. I'd like to see Bacuna get some minutes too. -

Lundstram is not as mobile as I expected, so maybe that sitting role is better for him? I actually thought he'd be the Arfield upgrade we've missed, but that's not materialised at all. However, I'm not sure he's creative enough for us; we kind of need a deep-lying playmaker there.

It's between Balogun and Lundstram, for me, with Wright good towards the end. I'll go with Lundstram; hopefully a corner has been turned.

I thought that was Gegenpressing in action. When we won the ball back, we were smothered and lost it within a couple of passes. In that situation we need to be clever and cute enough to pass out of it, or play on the transitions, but we did neither. We were too ponderous and happy to recycle--a la Domestic football--but before we know it, we've lost it again. We need to be able to pass out of it, or play on the transition: which can be as simple as preparing a set play where we get Morelos to make that inside-out run and play the ball into the channel; it might lose the ball, but it might get us in behind and territory at least. Too many players were below their best, but for me, it's the team aspect that highlights the real gulf in class between us and a CL team. We're too off-the-cuff. These sides know what they are doing in any given situation; it's been coached into them--as well as having better individual quality. They are able to pass out from the back, with all players taking the right positions; and they know what they are doing in attack, in terms of their patterns of play. OK-they smothered the space quite well, but I felt like we didn't have much of a clue as to what we were trying to do. How many times does Goldson sit on the ball, waiting for something to happen? It's too off-the-cuff. Defending in a block is fine, but we need a plan to break the opponent down, to create chances. They had better quality players, and we had too many not firing, but the team aspect is the issue, for me.

If it's an individual, no. Gegenpressing is a team tactic, whereby the team who have lost possession cut off passing lanes around the ball, and smother the space. Which is different from someone pressing. "Gegenpressing means 'counter-pressing' in German, and has become a buzzword thanks to its most famous proponent, Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, who honed the tactic in his earlier [clubs Mainz and Borussia Dortmund]. As Klopp explained, 'The best moment to win the ball is immediately after your team just lost it." I will concede, these 'new' tactical terms we throw about are not always new; merely refined from older ideas, and given a more accurate name.

Ach--Helander's slow as stop anyway...

It'll be a transition game. We won't have the possession to gegenpress - which tends to be intentional from SG in Europe. I would like to see us press, though; to take advantage of any potential lapses and the fact that they're early in their adoption of Bozs' style.

"As an aesthete, Bosz [likes] ball retention, direct and on the ground passing game and gegenpressing to retrieve the ball in just a few seconds." "[You] might want to fight for ball possession – provided you have technically gifted enough players to avoid gegenpressing – or you may choose to operate in transitions."

Oh-- Great. They've conceded again. FT CRY 3 - 0 TOT
