  1. UNDER-20s attacker Scott Roberts is targeting goals to add to his game after striking twice against Tynecastle tonight. Roberts grabbed the third and the fourth counters in the 6-0 triumph, and while happy with the end result, he shared the assessment of 20s coach Ian Durrant that it should have been more. He explained: “I want to be back in the goals this year as I didn’t score many last year. Hopefully that will give me confidence and I was happy with my two goals. “It was a good result and we played well tonight, although it could have been a lot more to be honest. “But we can’t argue with six goals.” The young side are continuing to adapt to the new 4-3-3 formation that is being deployed at all age groups at Rangers, and Roberts reckons the new set-up can help him develop his game. He continued: “It suits me a lot better than last year. I can get on the ball a lot easier and we can create a lot more chances and hopefully score a lot more goals.” First-team manager Mark Warburton took in the game this evening, although Roberts is well aware that it is not just matches the young players will have to impress the new boss in. He explained: “We’re trying to impress him every day in training as he sees all the videos. It’s all the time though, not just in games. “I’ve been round once this season to train with the first team, but my target is to be round there every day.”

  5. NICKY Law has revealed a face to face meeting with new Rangers manager Mark Warburton convinced him his future lies at Ibrox. The midfielder’s future appeared uncertain last month with speculation he may move to pastures new. But the 27-year-old has told Rangers TV the new management team have left him in no doubt that the Light Blues are going places. Law said: “It was good to come in after the summer and I had a good meeting with the manager and we had a good chat. “His message was clear – to give him everything I’ve got from day one and that is what I’ve been doing. “I’ve come in and done as much as I can and hopefully he has been impressed by me and what he has seen so far. “For me it’s about concentrating on being here, I really enjoy being at the club and this year there is a feeling of excitement around the club, probably for the first time since I’ve been here. “We are really looking forward to the new season and the new lads have come in and we have a really young squad of players at the minute. “The new philosophy and style of play I feel could compliment me and a lot of the other boys style. “The manager had a one on one meeting with a lot of the boys and I had one which was about five or 10 minutes long. “It was to introduce himself and speak about the things that he wanted from his players and the things he expects. “There was no grey area from day one because everybody knows what he expects and the standards he expects. “If you drop below those I don’t think it would be accepted and you would find yourself out of the team or maybe even out of the club so it is very strict.” Away from instilling a new philosophy in the players and their play the new boss has been making changes elsewhere and Law has been impressed. The 52-year-old is a man who believes small margins are vital in the modern game and he has put a number of new ideas in places at the club’s training ground. Law says he and his fellow players have seen the benefits of the fresh approach and are relishing the season opener. He smiled: “From day one there was little things the manager changed – we are in earlier now, we have a hydration test in the morning, which the manager is big on and everybody has to be at a certain hydration level before they train. “It is all little things like the food upstairs has changed and it is a bit healthier up there now, which has got a few lads complaining! “He is putting his stamp on things and he hasn’t done it all at once, it’s been gradual and I’m sure over the next couple of weeks we’ll see a few more things changing. “But everyone has enjoyed the changes and been working as hard as they can to impress the management team. “It is new and it has been enjoyable but it has been tough as well, we have been having triple sessions most days. “It’s been a different type of training; it has been a lot of ball work which probably isn’t what a lot of the lads are used to. “Most people have been used to mainly running based pre-seasons then the football comes a bit later but from the first moment it’s been pretty much football based, although we have done our running as well. “There have been a lot of ideas thrown at us as in the past couple of weeks, it has been crammed in but if you were to see the training that we have done then the lads have clearly taken to it. “Now we are trying to put it out into the games we have got coming up and it won’t be instant but we can see signs of improvement and that will hopefully only get better.” http://www.rangers.co.uk/news/headlines/item/9607-laying-down-the-law

  8. MAJOR changes are currently being implemented at Rangers, and while a lot of focus has been on the differences at first team level, the entire youth setup is also in the process of being overhauled. From first-team to under-8 level, every Rangers team will now play a single formation with an emphasis on positive play at all times. Young midfielder Max Ashmore has recently made the transition from under-17 to under-20 level at the club, and he has certainly noticed the alterations being made across the board. He explained: “The changes that have been made this pre-season mean there is a whole new culture to the academy now. “It’s a lot more positive and it’s a lot more disciplined. We’re trying to create an atmosphere that gets any energy sappers away from the club and gets everyone else who wants to do well for the club in. “That’s linked to the way we are trying to play football now with our 4-3-3 formation and looking to dominate the ball.” And the new tactical system is something Ashmore believes will suit him down to a tee. “I like playing deeper in the midfield, although I can play anywhere across the middle of the park,” he said. “I think it’s a really key role, and the manager likes it to be like an old-style number four. “It’s like being the anchor of the team and being able to get on the ball to push other people forward. It’s somewhere I certainly enjoy playing.” The first deployment of the new for the under-20s side came on Saturday in their 4-0 triumph over Dumbarton at Auchenhowie. It was an impressive showing from Ian Durrant’s fledgling stars, although the margin of victory could, and probably should have been greater, and Ashmore certainly agrees with that assessment. He continued: “We brought in a lot of the things we are trying to implement at the club. “We had a lot of the ball in the game, and we probably could have had a few more goals although 4-0 was probably still a good scoreline. “The coaches were proud of us for what we did though.” First-team manager Mark Warburton has already made his clear his belief in the youth setup and his admiration of the work Head of Academy Craig Mulholland is doing. And to that end, Ashmore and the rest of the under 20s squad will be keen to impress the former Brentford boss. Ashmore added: “I want to make my mark in the under-20s, and the manager will hopefully be at some of the 20s games, so we’ll need to see what happens after that. “He seems to have a lot of belief in youth, and he has said if we’re good enough then we will be played, so it’s now just a case of trying to impress him in training and in games and then hopefully if I’m given the chance then I can take it.” http://rangers.co.uk/news/academy-news/item/9606-change-is-afoot-at-murray-park

  14. http://www.heraldscotland.com/sport/football/exclusive-interview-nicky-law-says-mark-warburton-will-get-rangers-playing-total-foot.131765800 As Rangers have attempted to huff and puff their way back to the big time, perhaps the greatest threat to Nicky Law's physical wellbeing was the prospect of a crooked neck sustained while he continually watched a series of high balls being hoofed over his head. Putting it kindly, the style of play adopted by Rangers over the last few seasons has been less than aesthetically pleasing, so it does not come as a surprise to learn that the cultured Law is relishing the "total football" aspiration applied by new manager Mark Warburton. "He's been brilliant," Law said. "It's been enjoyable for me and most of the boys, we've got a lot of ball players and maybe in the last couple of years a lot of the games have probably passed us by and it hasn't been great on the eye, we know that. "We're hoping certainly that the fans are going to see a more expansive game and an exciting game, and with the way the manager wants us to play, there's no doubt that it will be. Training has been excellent and it's all geared towards what they're wanting from us in the games. It's been enjoyable but it's been difficult as well of course, as all pre-seasons are. "We've had to do a lot of thinking, which sounds daft, but there's always things he's looking for from you and we're getting used to his ideas. It's new to what we've been used to of course, it's total football, but the lads are enjoying it even though we're a long way away from where the manager wants us to be." Law's point may have been punctuated by a 3-2 defeat to the Tottenham Hotspur development squad on Friday, and he has called on the long-suffering Rangers support to give the players time to adapt to Warburton's methods as he attempts to provide them with a better quality of football. "The key word will be patience, particularly with the fans," Law said. "Hopefully they'll see over the coming months that we are trying to do things the right way, but there's going to be mistakes, as there was in the game on Friday. That's going to happen and it will for the foreseeable future, you'd imagine. "It's not going to be an overnight thing, it's going to take time. [Friday's game] was the first game where we've tried to implement the manager's ideas and what he wants from us, and of course it wasn't perfect, but I could certainly see improvements and you could see little bits of what we've been doing in the game so that's pleasing. "It's high-risk football if you like, it's all on the ground, but as the season goes on we're certainly hoping that we'll get stronger and stronger as the games come and go. "I'm sure over the next few weeks we will see some new faces, which will help of course, and I'm sure that they will be players that the manager has identified can come in and play the style that he demands, which will improve us I'm sure." To that end, Warburton has already recruited three new players that he feels will help him implement his favoured style of play. With the arrival of Danny Wilson, Rob Kiernan and Wes Foderingham, it is clear that Rangers will be looking to build from the back next season. Law has been impressed by the calibre of his new teammates. "They're really good lads and they fit into the philosophy of the manager," he said. "They're ball-playing players even though it's a goalkeeper and two centre-halves. "Everybody knows what Danny can do, he was excellent last season leading Hearts to the title and he's been excellent since he came in. You can see his quality and he's fantastic on the ball, which the manager obviously wants as he likes us to play it out from the back. "Big Rob has impressed everybody. He's a big lad and he's got two great feet. I think some of the boys are still trying to work out what foot is Rob's preferred one, because he plays with both and he's so comfortable in possession. "Wes has also come in and done great and he will provide great competition for us in goals, so the three that have come in so far have been very good, and I'm sure that the manager will be looking to add more players of that quality. "It's all positive signs and we're all looking forward to the next couple of weeks and getting some more game-time under our belts, so that when the real games come around we'll be more used to the manager and his ideas and we'll be ready to go." Whether the Rangers squad can successfully marry Warburton's ideals to achieving the consistency of result required to win the Championship title remains to be seen. Law admitted: "We need to be on a level probably that Hearts were last season, losing just one or two games in the league all year, that's the standard and we know that. "Last year at times we probably did too much talking and didn't show enough on the pitch. Our job this year is to take that out on the pitch and be more consistent, which I'm sure we will be."
  15. Warburton mentioned Hardie after the Spurs workout.
  16. On FF, Jason Holt training with us this week.
  17. It sounds as if you think we have the wrong Manager. He obviously agreed to the package offered to him, now he is Managing and recruiting in his usual way. If you are not happy, perhaps we could hear your alternatives for the Board and Manager.
  18. Smoke signals.
  19. UNDER-20s full-back Ross McCrorie was left with mixed feelings after today’s 4-0 win over Dumbarton. While delighted to get the win, McCrorie admits the scoreline should have been even more impressive in the young Light Blues’ favour, and he reckons that he too should have got on the scoresheet on at least one occasion. Speaking to RangersTV.tv, he said: “It was good to get the legs going and to get back into it. It was a good scoreline, a good victory, and that should get the boys’ confidence up ahead of the games that are coming up. “I should have had a goal though. I had a few chances and with a bit more composure, maybe I could have scored. But that will come when we get more games.” “Overall, it should have been a lot more. The boys know that but it will come, and as the games build-up we’ll put those sort of chances away and hopefully we’ll be ready in time for the league.” Rangers took some time to settle into the match, with Dumbarton having some joy in the early stages, but McCrorie believes that was simply down to the integration of a number of younger players for the first time. He added: “There were a few boys making their debuts at this level today, so there were a few nerves about. It was a really young team we had out, and most of the boys are only in the first year of under-20s. “They did really well today though.” McCrorie has trained with Mark Warburton’s first-team squad already this season, and he revealed he will be looking to impress as he aims to become a more permanent feature in the senior Rangers squad. “It’s been a great experience getting to know them all,” he explained. “I’ve been trying to show the manager what I can do, so hopefully I can build on that and the manager keeps picking me to take part with the first-team more.” http://www.rangers.co.uk/news/academy-news/item/9600-mccrorie-it-should-have-been-more
