Well Pompey.

Gers To Face Pompey

RANGERS will continue preparations for the 2009/10 season with a high profile pre season friendly against English Premier League side Portsmouth.

Walter Smith will take his side to the south coast on Saturday 8 August for a 3pm kick off against a side that finished 14th in England's top flight last season.

Pedro Mendes' former side, who are currently subject to an offer from United Arab Emirates businessman Sulaiman Al Fahim, boast a host of international players including England stars David James, Peter Crouch and Glen Johnson.

Johnson has been heavily linked with Chelsea and Liverpool this summer and is expected to depart Fratton Park for one of England's top four clubs.

However the likes of highly rated Croatian midfielder Niko Kranjcar, French defender Sylvain Distin and ex-Arsenal stars Lauren and Kanu are all expected to play a part against the Light Blues.

Coming on the back of a pre-season tour to Germany and testing ties with Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal at the Emirates Cup, Pompey will provide Smith's side with another tough challenge ahead of the SPL kick off seven days later.

The Ibrox boss said: "This will be another good test for the players as we prepare for the defence of our SPL title and the group stage of the Champions League.

"Portsmouth did well to win the FA Cup two seasons ago and matches at Fratton Park are always difficult for any team.

"In recent years we have played Chelsea and Liverpool and with Arsenal to come in the Emirates Cup in August, followed by Portsmouth, our players will enjoy a sold pre-season workout against two English Premiership sides."

Anyone know if we're going to get a Premiership side to Ibrox this summer? We've had Tottenham, Arsenal, Middlesborough, Chelsea and Liverpool in recent years.

Do we have time? Not being facetious, genuine question as I haven't looked closely at the friendly dates in reference of the real stuff getting underway.
