Barry Ferguson set to seal £1.25m switch to Birmingham City

Jul 16 2009 Keith Jackson

BARRY Ferguson's agent was jetting to England from his Dubai home last night as the deposed Rangers skipper prepared to finally end his Ibrox career.

Record Sport understands Ferguson's advisor John Viola was instructed to get back to Britain as quickly as possible yesterday as Birmingham City and Rangers haggled on a final fee for his departure.

At tea-time last night both clubs shook hands on a deal which will see Rangers net an initial sum of £1million for the 31-year-old with a further £250,000 to come in add-ons.

Now all that remains is for Ferguson and Viola to agree personal terms when they sit down with City boss Alex McLeish at St Andrews today.

Ferguson is expected to be offered a three-year contract which will at least match his current bumper pay packet - a deal which would have been halved even before his infamous part in the booze-gate scandal which shook Scottish football last season.

Ferguson's days as a Rangers player have been numbered ever since the bevvy session, which cost him his armband for both club and country.

But, so long as he passes a medical and thrashes out a new wage deal, the player should secure a second crack at the English top flight following his brief stop-off at Blackburn.

I dont see how moving to Birmingham is such a big deal for these players on huge money. There are tens of 1000s of Scots who have made the move down south and its a 1 hour plane journey and depending on where you stay it can be a 2-8 hour drive. In BFs case, brum to Glasgow wont take longer than 5 hours but im sure he can afford the 1 hour flight. So the homesick argument shouldnt play a part.

Ferguson is 7 years older (not sure if wiser would have been the right word) than when he moved to blackburn and has the experience of a move so I cant see what would be holding him back. He and his wife should know this is his last bumper pay day as a footballer so should be grabbing it with 2 hands.
