Microsoft founder Bill Gates has increased his stake in troubled sports chain JJB.

The billionaire now owns 3.14% of the battling business after his foundation bought another 800,000 shares for £180,000 on Tuesday.

The news sent JJB's share price soaring 12% yesterday.

One City trader said: "There's rumours going round that he wants to increase his stake further so he must see something in the company."

It is not the first purchase Gates has made in a British firm. In May last year he bought a small stake in Carpetright.
