17s Head For Glamour Tourney

RANGERS under-17s travel to Liverpool this weekend for a glamour tournament as they step-up their preparations for their new season.

The youngsters begin their competitive campaign next weekend against Aberdeen, but they will face the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and hosts Liverpool this week on Merseyside, and the challenge of facing top-class opposition is something that excites their coach Billy Kirkwood.

Speaking to RangersTV.tv, he said: “We’re really looking forward to it and it’s a new experience for us all, including myself to have five games in three days against good opposition.

“It’s a different environment, travelling down on the bus and staying there for a few nights, and that should help the boys to get to know me and I’ll get to know them, so we’re going to use it as a positive experience.

“The three games are an hour long with two halves of 30 minutes, so we can rotate round 18 players, and we will use it as a build-up to our first game of the season next weekend against Aberdeen at home.”

The new 4-3-3 formation a Rangers has also been introduced at 17’s level, and while Kirkwood has been happy so far with how his players have adapted, he’s looking forward to seeing how his players cope against the very best standard of opposition at the under-17 age group.

He continued: “Very much so. With our new style of play, we’re looking forward to going to play teams who might have the ball a lot more than us.

“It’s a great learning experience for me and the players, and we can take a lot out of this.

“It’s different teams in a different environment, so it will be interesting to see how they adapt when they have the ball and when we get the ball, it will be important that we retain it and try to impose our style of play on them.

“Hopefully it’s a case of “best v best” and it will be a learning curve for them, so we’re going there with our eyes wide open and hopefully we come back with a lot of things we can take into the new season.”

The tournament will see Rangers play five matches over three days against Liverpool, Spurs, Charlton, Stabaek and AIK Stockholm, and while admitting the quick-fire nature of the games isn’t ideal, Kirkwood is hopeful his charges will adapt.

He explained: “In a perfect world, we probably wouldn’t do it, but the fact it’s a tournament and we have the likes of Liverpool and Spurs there, means it’s important we go down there with an open mind.

“I’m looking for the style of play to continue as it has so far, and also to give some lads game-time to build their fitness.

“We’ve got a good youthful squad to rotate round, and hopefully they can get an idea of what it’s like to play against so-called better opposition.”

Cheers!

How are the youth teams facing up? Have the changes initiated by Warbuton begun to filter down?

To be fair they changed to a more passing style when Craig Mulholland took over as head of youth. There has been further changes since Warburton came in with the style and formation now mirroring the first team.

It won't happen overnight, these kids have been "coached" to play an entirely different style for years.
