They seem to go on about hating the British army due to "crimes" committed in Ireland as well as "imperialism".

Does that mean the most of the world should follow suit in hating the Catholic church with such vehemence because it has committed far greater crimes in its history including imperialism; genocide; tyranny; torture, burning and slaughter of anyone who doesn't agree with them and all sorts of despicable acts. Even lately it has been guilty of paedophilia and the disgusting covering up of same.

Are these Celtic fans rationalising their hatred for the British army, rational enough to apply it to all cases including the Catholic Church, the IRA and those Irish republicans who worked for the Nazis?

It's a load of cobblers.

PS I don't personally hate Catholics for the above but I do hate rank hypocrisy.

It seems that, according to their tired, old rhetoric, anti celtc equals anti catholic but anti Rangers equals anti bigotry...which they think excuses them to make the most vicious smears and slurs against the Rangers support...

intolerance is intolerance is intolerance...

Reminds me of the Eminem line "You find me offensive? I find you offensive, for finding me offensive"

McAlpine ââ?¬â?? See No Evil, Hear No Evil

Written by Opportunity Knox

Wednesday, 07 April 2010

One finds it rather amusing when mhedia commentators in Scotland express their somewhat stunned responses to communication to the public.

One should always work on the assumption, that when a ââ?¬Å?journalistââ?¬Â, or columnist feels they have to defend themselves, that perhaps they should just take that little bit longer, and engage with correspondents to try and gain some understanding as to why they have driven readers to put pen to paper, or take time out to send an email.

Such journalists seem surprised that people will question their integrity, or inform them of background that they have missed in their ââ?¬Å?researchââ?¬Â or knowledge of a given subject.

The latest writer defending a piece is Joan McAlpine, the Sunday Times Assistant Editor in Scotland.

McAlpine, like many mhedia types of the current age, likes to write a blog, which is invariably even more egocentric than normal ââ?¬Å?printââ?¬Â output.

Those who read blogs as well as ââ?¬Å?printââ?¬Â journalism will know exactly what I mean. When journalists get let loose on a blog, the increase of name dropping is remarkable, as is the increase of ââ?¬Å?when I wasââ?¬Â¦Ã¢â?¬Â anecdotes.

Its also noticeable how parochial and incestuous the Scottish media world is.

In a recent blog, McAlpine waxed lyrically about her beloved Celtic Football Club with a nauseating piece of propaganda usually found on Celtic fan sites.

The blog in question, ââ?¬Å?Celtic FC, The Tin Bath Yearsââ?¬Â had to be read to be believed.

She name drops her ââ?¬Å?friendsââ?¬Â Greame Murdoch, and Kevin McKenna who are the art director and Editor respectively of the overpriced history of Ra Shellik.

While talking up Murdochs picture finding skill, one had to laugh at the prose dedicated to someone given free reign to look for photographs. Its hardly rocket science.

ââ?¬Å?He discovered a treasure trove of memorabilia at Celtic Park, with amazing images stored in boxes (not biscuit tins!) or simply scattered on the floor of forgotten rooms.ââ?¬Â

One can only hope Murdoch didnt find any more black bags of photos in any of those forgotten rooms belonging to former Celtic FC photographer; John Cullen.

ââ?¬Å?Given the club's social and cultural importance around the globe, not just in Scotland and Ireland, it's extraordinary that it doesn't have its own museum and curator, like the Scottish Football Museum in Hampden Park. It would draw the crowds on non-match days, when there is now very little reason to head for Parkhead.ââ?¬Â

McAlpine is such a fervent fan that she seems unaware that Celtic do indeed have a museum open 6 days a week.

The ââ?¬Å?social and cultural importance round the globeââ?¬Â is surely a line of comedy genius worthy of an award. Is there even an award for comedy in journalism?

If so, please nominate Joan.

Celtic are so culturally important, with such global appeal, that they attracted just over 12,000 "bemused locals" for their last game in USA, leading the Chicago Fire coach to state that Celtic ââ?¬Å?weren't a big enough attractionââ?¬Â.

So important in "The Oul Country" that the last time they visited, a grand total of just over 7,000 people, including home-team fans, paid to watch them. Oh, and that 7,000 was the total for TWO games.

Such a pull that 27,000 turned up to see them play in Japan last they visited, where the average home crowd in a stadium that holds 72,000 is eh.......27,000.

Celtic & Culture are two phenomena that are incompatible, unless you call irrational hatred of Great Britain a culture.

I digress. The mere mention of Kevin McKenna was enough to ring alarm bells for many, including myself.

McKenna, for those Rangers fans too young to remember, is the former Shellik View Editor who resigned in shame from his post, after being outed on tape as a Republican who condoned the Enniskillen atrocity as a ââ?¬Å?legitimate act of warââ?¬Â, before stating Protestants ââ?¬Å?breed illegitimate children like rabbitsââ?¬Â

A nice Gentleman Im sure youll agree. Unsurprisingly, even after this shame, McKenna has never been short of work in Scotland, and has since gone on to be editor of the Herald, and Daily Mail in Scotland, and now finds himself at The Observer in Scotland.

Of course, many correspondents to the blog would be likely to mention McKennas dubious history, questioning why one would be so proud of being friends with the bigot, and quite rightly so.

We are not to know what the correspondents points were, as Ms McAlpine moderates the comments on the blog.

ââ?¬Å?This was a light-hearted little posting so I was quite surprised at the venom in some of the unprintable comments I received from people claiming to be fans of Rangers FC. I moderate the blog and have not published them.ââ?¬Â

ââ?¬Å?The latter part, about the need for a decent museum for fans to go to could easily have applied to Rangers and Ibrox. I'm sure they too have a magnificent archive of photographs and memorabilia which is not on display. They too have a global following and are an important part of the cultural history of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Scottish and Scots-Irish Diaspora.ââ?¬Â

Neat little trick in trying to appease your critics Joan, but please be aware that in this part of the world we call ââ?¬Å?Scots-Irishââ?¬Â ââ?¬Å?Ulster Scotsââ?¬Â.

As for your next paragraph:

ââ?¬Å?However the people commenting on this post weren't interested in addressing that, they just wanted to abuse me for being a Celtic fan and being friends with Kevin McKenna. For the record guys, Kevin got into trouble for making comments before I knew him - 20 years ago, right?ââ?¬Â

Sadly, McAlpine cant even bring herself to detail said comments from McKenna.

Instead, she embarks on a futile damage limitation exercise stating ââ?¬Å?Your bitterness stretches back a long way. I have no idea what he said at the time, but if his comments were offensive, I imagine they were made after a long night, when spirits were high and drink was taken. And they would not have been meant seriously.ââ?¬Â

ââ?¬Å?Your bitternessââ?¬Â indeed.

This, from a writer, who in her profile states ââ?¬Å?Bobby Sands' mock funeral in Bundoran, Co Donegal, 1981, will live with me foreverââ?¬Â

McAlpine would have been in her late 20s, and already working as a journalist in Scotland when McKenna made his career defining outburst.

Are we to believe that McAlpine did not know about McKennas outburst?

The lack of condemnation and the glib blaming of alcohol, alongside her own special moment tells everything one needs to know.

Not content with digging a deeper hole for herself, she then goes on to compare the plight of McKenna to that of Donald Findlay, before adding that she employed Findlay at the Herald.

Yes, she is comparing Donald Findlay singing The Sash, to a man condoning mass murder.

McKenna didnââ?¬â?¢t make an off the cuff remark, he was a member of the ââ?¬Å?Troops Outââ?¬Â movement at University, and admitted ââ?¬Å?jazzing upââ?¬Â articles in Belfast Republican rag ââ?¬Å?The Irish Newsââ?¬Â

The irony of self confessed ââ?¬Å?socialistââ?¬Â McAlpine working for the same media group who printed the story on McKenna is clearly lost on her.

Then again, this is the journalist, who alongside ex husband Pat Kane revelled in the reputation of being one of Scotlands new generation of upwardly mobile educated Socialists, while sending their children to a private school.

McAlpine is symptomatic of all that is wrong in Scottish media in this current age.

Rumour has it, she cannot even spell ââ?¬Å?Glasgowââ?¬Â (yeah, check your ââ?¬Å?38 minutesââ?¬Â page Joan)

It is quite clear in certain mhedia circles that the pre-requisite requirement for advancement is to be a republican bigot with an aversion to the truth.

This site just last month, carried an article entitled ââ?¬Å?News International Filth Caught Againââ?¬Â.

Their employment of McAlpine simply re-emphasises that observation about the scum who work from Queen Street.

As for The Guardian Group employing McKenna, its not unexpected.

The Mhedia in Scotland, and shareholders in these companies are frequently questioning why their circulation is dropping, citing the digital age as their main threat.

That may well be the case, but perhaps they should look a little bit closer to home.

Just to let people know that Dave Boyle - the Chief Executive of SD replied yesterday afternoon.

They feel now the article has been amended, that they consider the matter to have been dealt with.

Given no apology was offered, I disagree and have asked Mr Boyle a few supplementary questions in conjunction with the background of the CST and SD's opinion on their approach.
