Daily Record Caught Lying About the Rangers Support

Recommended Posts

A few days ago the Record ran a story regarding the Lithuania v Scotland game.

They (Colin Duncan) claimed the following:

LITHUANIAN officials have drafted in state troops plus hundreds of extra police officers to help deal with the Tartan Army.

Kaunas city council have also cancelled one of the country's biggest summer festivals in an effort to avoid any potential flashpoints during Scotland's visit this weekend.

Around 3000 supporters will descend on the second-largest city in Lithuania on Friday when Craig Levein's side begin their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign.

And the locals are not prepared to take any security risks despite the good reputation of the Scotland fans.

The Tartan Army will be given an escort to the Dariaus Gireno Stadium on Friday night while police officers will be positioned outside every city-centre bar to look out for potential troublemakers.

Kaunas municipality director Vygantas Guden said: "Scottish football fans can endanger the safety of the Kaunas people.

"City police leaders have warned us they could be flooded with problems so we must take every step to ensure to ensure law and order.

"The police have tightened up security following the trouble caused by Rangers supporters during their Champions League qualifying clash with FBK Kaunas in the city two years ago."

Deputy council chief Zeno Abramaviius said: "We hope that this time the Scottish fans will be much calmer but we will be watching them very closely."

"We have brought in more troops and there will be a larger police force than usual. We know the Scottish fans will drink in the bars so our forces will certainly be strengthened.

"Two years ago there were instances where fans threw televisions through the windows of their hotels. We hope this time they will behave in a civilised manner."

Meanwhile, Lithuanian skipper Tomas Danilevicius is bracing himself for a rough ride on the pitch.

He said: "Scottish football is pretty rough. They are physically strong footballers so to play against them will not be easy.

"In the last Euro qualifiers they beat us here so we will need to work a lot harder this time if we want to get a victory."

They are talking about Kaunas v Rangers.

After contacting one of the directors above, Mr. Vygantas Gudenas, a couple of FF posters got the following reply:

Dear Sir,

I would like to thank you for the e-mail messages.

Referring to your letter, I would like to say that I never was interviewed by any journalist from Glasgow and never mentioned to any journalist that Scottish football fans pose danger to the safety of Kaunas people. It must be a misunderstanding, as the journalist of the Lithuanian daily "Lietuvos rytas" writes about the fact that we do not want the two big events - the football match, and the cultural event "Kauno naktys" ("Kaunas Nights") to coincide, as it is a big challenge for the city. Furthermore, I want to inform that Kaunas City Municipality cannot enlarge or tighten the police forces during football matches, as it is not in the scope of our capacity. Kaunas City Municipality cannot even organize football matches. There must have been misquotations in the newspapers about it.

I would like to stress that we very cordially welcome all foreign tourists to our city and we do our best to make them leave Kaunas with the best impressions and memories. I hope you will visit our city again!

Kind regards,

Vygantas Gudenas

Director of Kaunas City Municipal Administration

Interesting stuff. Always good to catch these clowns with their pants down... :robbo:

Although it was his deputy who made the quote highlighted, so it could still be accurate, if laughably wide of the mark.

Plus, you have to be willing to believe this chap is telling the truth- he could be lying equally as much as the Record. Certainly I know who I'd believe, but I'm just saying.

The record has plenty of previous, and they are not alone in Scottish media circles either.

I hope without much expectation that the Club issues a statement on this very blatant misrepresentation, ask about the motives of the paper and reporter in concuting such a story, and demand a very public apology.

Better still, ask all supporters to refrain from buying said rag outright, not just their usual apathetic response that we can choose to buy or not to buy on our own merits.

However, just like with Miller's "exclusive" with the Rhebel today, this comic will continue to be allowed full access to our players for in-depth one-to-one interviews, then allowed to slant said interview with misleading headlines and comment without any further comeback.
