Rangers release some players.

Recommended Posts

Unsurprising really.

Unfortunately, Rangers have had to let some of their youngsters go at the end of this season. Players released include Andrew Shinnie, Stephen Stirling, Archie Campbell, Wayne Drummond, Cristiano Kisuka and Steven Hetherington.

It is a setback for the youngsters but hopefully they will all find new clubs over the summer and get their careers back on track. It's always unfortunate that some of the youngsters have to get let go at the end of the season.

Out of the ones that got let go, Andrew Shinnie is probably the most familiar of names for a lot of us. Shinnie made two appearances for the first team, and spent much of the last couple of seasons on loan to Dundee.

He has played for Scotland at under-21 level, playing three times and scoring one goal.

When I was working with Falkirk they were happy if one or two players made the step up from the youth squads (u19s) to the full-time squads; first and reserve teams, each season.

People may dismiss that as it being only Falkirk, but I think that is fairly normal throughout football teams across the country. It's the nature of developing your own talent. Realistically, the vast majority will not make it, or at least only at a lower level.

Not sure if this was the vital football article released yesterday, but it's about 5 days late. Rangers Academy News released an article detailing these departures on the 26th.

Anyway, it may well be that their age has forced their release in some cases because I think these lads are all 19 or over now with the exception of Steven Hetherington. If they grow too old for the youth system and they're not likely to get a chance with the first team, then there's no choice but to release them and wish them well.

Only the very very best truly make it at Ibrox; Ferguson, Hutton, McGregor. If a player is not of that calibre his days are generally numbered and as Blue Heaven showed, their future is anyone's guess. On one hand it's a good thing as we won't end up with average players in the first team, but it also shows just how unlikely players are to make it. There is the next tier, guys like Wylde, Fleck, Ness - they have a chance, but time will tell if they truly make their mark on the first team.
