Europa League Teams In Draw Tomorrow

Recommended Posts

It could be worse, but they're the Slovenian champions and their number 9 is a very good wee Brazilian goalscorer. Their number 10 is a very promising young Macedonian who's potentially the next Pandev.

I reckon that we're good enough to overcome Maribor, even though they had a good result against Hibs recently. But we're not Hibs. Should be easy enough!

It's just over 10 years since we beat them 6-1 on aggreate...

Two completely different teams ten years ago, so not really relevant at all tbh. It's probably more relevant to look at their Champions League and Europa League records in Europe compared to ours. They actually have a very reasonable CL record: Played 34, Won 15, drawn 5 and lost 14.... 42 goals for and 50 goals against. Not too shabby!! How does that compare to our CL record?

I dont think that is a good comparison either. Both teams will have changed far too often upwards AND downwards in terms of quality for there to be a decent comparable set ot statistics.

The only comparison is NOW. And we dont really have that. They will be dangerous but we really SHOULD be beating these types of teams.

Statistical comparisons of a team's record in Europe over a decade or two will rarely be an exact science, but it's still more relevant than looking at one individual result from a decade ago. To do it properly would take a fair amount of working out though because we've played a lot more CL games than Maribor have in that period where they've played 34 CL games.

FWIW, even if we do look back to that 6-1 agg win over them a decade ago, they actually came to Ibrox and went in leading 0-1 at half time IIRC, but we tore them apart in the second half.

It's all fine and well to say what type of teams we should be beating in Europe, but history proves that you don't always beat the teams you think you should be beating. You can be sure that Man U thought they should have been beating us at Old Trafford last season, but we took a draw off them and they were lucky to get a win at Ibrox.
