Charles green can get rangers for a song says low

Recommended Posts

DAVID LOW, the financial consultant who advised Fergus McCann on his takeover of Celtic in 1994, insists that Charles Green will be buying Rangers for a song.

Low knows the former Sheffield United chief executive (who unveiled his CVA proposals last night) but denied internet rumours that he is part of the consortium aiming to rescue the Light Blues.

However, while he believes that Green is getting Rangers for a knock-down price, he warned that it could take another four years for Ally McCoistâ??s side to challenge seriously for the title â?? exactly the same time it took for Celtic to become champions under McCann.

â??Thereâ??s no question that Green will be getting a bargain,â? said Low. â??If you look at the Stock Market rating of Celtic and factor in their debt then the club is worth £52m. Itâ??s known as their enterprise value. With Celtic the benchmark for a â??cleanâ?? Rangers then being able to buy the club for £8.5m obviously represents a good deal.â?

Low admits to having discussed Greenâ??s takeover with him but stressed that his involvement has been almost non-existent.

â??I know Charles because he and I share a City advisor and he knew about my part in Fergusâ??s takeover,â? he said.â??I met him and he spoke about his plans but my only advice to him was that he should make sure that he gets some high-profile Rangers fans with money on board.â?

McCann famously saved Celtic from going under and then walked away with a £30m profit five years later. Low doesnâ??t expect Green to do as well on the Ibrox deal but is sure that the Yorkshireman can still make a profit.

â??Due to the crimes committed by others before him, it looks as though Rangers wonâ??t be able to buy players for the next year,â? he said.â??Thatâ??s not Greenâ??s fault, although it will save him and his consortium money. Heâ??s also not to blame for the fact that many of the highest-paid players may decide to leave, which will also reduce the wage bill.

â??Due to the actions of the previous owners there will also be no European income so Green needs to do is prove that heâ??s capable of running Rangers cheaply until the sanctions imposed on them no longer apply.

â??Basically, circumstances will force Rangers to do what they should have been doing years ago; invest properly in their youth system and scouting network. At the same time money will need to be spent on essential renovation work at the stadium and at the training complex.â?

For that reason, Low believes that Rangers fans will need to be patient.â??Green will be running a straitjacketed Rangers and Fergus found himself in the same position when he took over,â? he said.

â??As well as dealing with the debt he had to comply with the Taylor Report, which meant rebuilding Celtic Park and putting 60,000 seats in.Because of the time it took to pay for all that it took a while before there was money available to strengthen the squad to championship level.

â??Fortunately, the Celtic fans bought into what Fergus was doing and turned up in their numbers. As long as the Rangers punters understand the situation and continue to follow their team then they should be back in contention for the title within the next 3-5 years.â?

I stomped 16 miles on a trail amid Shenandoah splendour today. The tempreture was touching 90 degrees before a cooling rain arrived. Thus, the edge had been taken off and I was anticipating an evening of cool Tennessee Pale Ale. I return to my hotel, log on, and there is no slaking my thirst.

Let me make this quite clear, David Low is another sanctimonious prig. Twenty years past, Poison pen Phil Gordon dedicated an entire column to one aspect of a fawning interview with Low. It was concerning the deliberations Low experienced reference what necktie to wear the evening Brian Dempsey announced, "the rebels have won". David decided on his St Aloysius FP tie and Poison pen Phil congratulated him on such a sage decision.

Who next to comment? What has Jim Torbet got to say on the matter? He must be the only Yahoo alive who has not been asked to comment. There was a high alert today for snakes on the trail. It doesn't matter where you go, Sellik supporters spitting venom, they're everywhere.

I don't see what you're getting so upset about. The papers need to fill their pages, which I will then ignore. Low is a tim, who is no doubt relishing this summer of our agony; I certainly enjoyed theirs of years past.

As to his schooling of choice, who cares? Would it not be easier to enjoy yourself in your John Muir pilgrimage or whatever you're doing and forget about diddy people in diddy papers?

On the other hand, it's not for me to tell you what to do. It seems a bit unnecessarily maschochistic, though.

I may be looking at this Low connection wrongly.....

This is a financial consultant who advised on McCann's SUCCESSFUL takeover & restructuring of Celtic. He has chatted to Charles Green, and offered some advice on the takeover @ Rangers. He has also confirmed that he is NOT part of the consortium.

Where is the big issue????

That's the way I see it.

There's no point in worrying about these sideshow events - just a distracting blather to fill pages.

The thing that's bothering me is Green's lack of visible dosh. That's what I need reassurance over.
