Our European record - conversation moved from other thread

The point is not about "being a European success", but people coming up saying we have been "a disaster." To some it seems that there is only black and if you argue against that, they come up with telling you that there ain't just white either. of course there is not. Never was and never will be. But it sure was not disaster all the way ... so as always, the answers lies somewhere in the middle, blotted by black spots and shining whites (Parma, Lyon, PSV, Monaco, Manchester 2008 et al)

The occasional great night every other year if that's a measure of success then almost every club can claim success. I'm not having a pop at you DB but if your happy with our standard of play and results over the last 20 years then your easy pleased.

That's a convenient place to start a poor run of Euro results if you want a wee Walter bashing session.

Pick Advocaat's worst run of Euro results as our manager and work out how much dosh he spent over that period in comparison to what Walter spent on players almost a decade later over a similarly sized run of games. Then on top of that, try comparing the quality of the squads of players the two managers had at their disposal and what they managed to get out of them in terms of Euro success. :smokin:

With Advocaat we actually tried to compete in Europe, rather than just cram the defence with as many defenders as possible.

I just had a look online and looked at our last 35 European results. Excluding penalties, we have won 3, yes THREE, matches outright. There is no two ways about it. It's atrocious

Quite enjoyed that read and debate over the last 4 pages about our Euro performances. In some games I just wish Walter had the balls to have a go more at teams and play to our strengths. He was certainly naive in Europe in the 90s playing 3-5-2 in games with likes of Craig Moore in midfield.

Thinking back to Barcelona at Ibrox when we held the best club in Europe to a draw, with Daniel Cousin being awesome that night, showed we had a lot more in the locker.

Like Kuznetsov says, the enjoyment of reaching Manchester only for a no show in the game was extremely dissapointing.
