Using it as a means to gel the team is a bit pointless when some key members of said team are away on int. duty.

Even more point to play the regular system and bring in the fringe an youngsters in this game so they are used to fitting in when it matters.

You can really argue from both sides....practice your default formation/tactics so that even fringe players are comfortable, but the problems with that is the opposition then know exactly how we are going to try & play and if you are forced to change things, it is then unfamiliar. The flip side is that you work on various formations, utilising players in maybe not their most favoured position so that as a manager you are comfortable changing things knowing that the team can still perform.

What would folks reaction be if McCoist tried altering the formation during the match??? If it worked, he would be a tactical genius....fail & he's a moron who should be sacked.

The team will gel fine during normal training session - that's why they have them!!!

Seems to me you are just looking for a reason to have a go at McCoist

Absolutely not. If you read over the anti McCoist posts you find I am not one of them and say he should be judged after 6-8 games. Im just a tad confused that he had a chance to blend a team and give them 90 mins to get to know each other on the park more and give them more fitness in their real positions but he didntopt for it.

Watching Germany vs the Faroers right now, No. 2 vs. No. 154 in the FIFA ranking and seeing what we have to exepect for some time to come. That is a team digging in and relying on counter attacks. Might be that these superstars from Bayern, Dortmund, Real and Lazio whip up 6 goals in the second half, but for now, the Faroer really giving it their all.

... and against such an approach we e.g. need to test various formations and different players and thus hopefully be prepared for all situations.
