Scottish Football League reveal detail of radical restructure plans

The format will introduce a 16-team top flight which has two automatic relegation places and a further relegation place for the loser of a play-off between the 13th and 14th placed teams. Each side will play 30 games in the standard season but there will be an expanded "Champions League style" League Cup competition.

 

The second tier, called the Championship, comprises 10 sides, two of which will be automatically promoted and a third side will go up after a play-off between the third and fourth placed teams.

 

There are two automatic relegation places and the eighth placed team faces a play-off with the third, fourth and fifth placed side from the third tier.

 

The bottom side in the three leagues would play the best side from a pyramid structure to keep their league status.

 

A winter break for the Premier Division is incorporated into the proposal.

 

The plans would require a merger between the SFL and the Scottish Premier League but it is hoped that the redesign would deliver a better product for fans and increase revenue.

pretty good on the face of it except: 1) the "champions league style" (i.e what they used to do in the 1970s for a while) would have made more sense for the more valuable Scottish Cup and 2) what is the point of renaming the 1st Div to the Championship? Do they think that by copying England we'll be fooled into thinking the football will be any better?

Sounds pretty good. I would prefer a longer league season but if we are playing in Europe and the League Cup games are played at the start of the season it would give us the chance to rotate the squad and blood some young players.

 

Winter break is a must. I'd have a month from the middle of Dec to middle of Jan.

i think we can see the advantage of less games in celtcs cl performances.

2 leagues one of 20 the other 22 2 up 2 down and a play off between the third top and the third bottom simples .

i would also point out that as we play catch up to celtc less of games will give us a chance to win the league.

 

indeed any team who wins all their games against the diddys and took even a couple of points of us and celtc will have a chance.

Sounds like its well worth a shot...how can it be any worse than the current set up. If it doesnt work out at least they tried to restructure.

 

30 games is a tad on the low side but that could allow for a winter break plus the league cup games being played on weekends rather than midweeks - giving better crowds.
