Charles Green gave his backing to a supporters boycott

DUNDEE UNITED have been told by the SFA that there is nothing they can do to interfere in the planned boycott by Rangers fans ahead of the Scottish Cup clash between the two teams.

Earlier this month, the Tannadice club wrote to Scottish footballâ??s governing body after Rangers chief Charles Green backed supportersâ?? plans to boycott the match, with United owner Stephen Thompson seeking clarification on a number of issues including the Ibrox sideâ??s right to their share of the gate money if they refused to sell tickets for the match.

SFA chiefs are believed to have informed United that the Third Division side have not breached any rules or articles by making the decision. Thompson had been subject to criticism from sections of the Rangers support following his attitude towards the clubâ??s application to rejoin the SPL, and had enraged Ibrox fans by refusing them refunds when a match at Tannadice between the two teams in November 2009 was abandoned due to adverse weather conditions.

However, the SFA may have to step in should no agreement be reached over ticket pricing for the tie.

Charles Green had previously promised to give his clubâ??s share of the gate money from the match to charity.

Dundee United have been incredibly stupid in this as well as greedy and petty. You hold the match and sell what tickets you can. You can't force anyone to buy them and if they want to change the rules about giving only the proportion of the the ticket sales of the opposition fans from next season, we'll be more than happy with that.

It's been obvious for a while that they have no idea about fairness and are incredibly self serving in their thoughts.

How can a club like this have been allowed to vote on our SPL membership?

But Thompson can sleep easy anyway, we are told. Solidarity amongst the grand teams of the SPL has seen their supporters band together and are willing to fill Tannadice to the hilt! They are already saving money to match the entrance fees and to fulfill that they have even took the pain not to go to the games of their own teams to support the cause.

I think it will be quite funny if other teams do sell out Tannadice. Appart from Celtic, DU are the one team that have been somewhat insulated from the absence of Rangers due to the Dundee Derby, so now if other suffering clubs lose their own fans' money for them to attend a DU game they might start to see who the only beneficiaries are - DU and Celtic.

There are so many chairmen and fans of the other clubs that have yet to figure out that they have been duped big time by these two.

DUNDEE United and Rangers have made their peace over how proceeds will be split for their Scottish Cup clash at Tannadice in February and an area of the stadium will be set aside for away supporters, despite the Ibrox club’s decision to refuse a ticket allocation for the match.

United had initially been reluctant to split the gate money with Rangers due to the boycott, which was called as a result of the way Rangers believe they were treated in being frozen out of the SPL, but have accepted a ruling from the SFA that receipts should be divided in the usual manner. The Tannadice club will now lower prices to £15 for adults and £5 concessions for the 2 February tie. “Reduced admission prices have been agreed in a constructive dialogue with Rangers,” a club statement explained. “A section of the stadium will be reserved for those Rangers fans who wish to attend,” a club statement added.

Dundee United director Derek Robertson added: “While we remain disappointed with the position of Rangers in respect of not taking any tickets for this match, we will not make any statements which may inflame the situation, particularly to avoid encouraging any hostility between our two sets of supporters. Now that ticket prices have been agreed, we hope that everyone can now focus on what matters most; a game of football.

“Although Rangers do not wish to take a ticket allocation for this match, opposition fans are always welcome at Tannadice and we will be happy to reserve an appropriate section of the stadium for any Rangers fans who wish to attend this fixture.”
