Green - Choose Me Or Murray

Recommended Posts

CHARLES GREEN has rocked the new Rangers boardroom by threatening to quit the club unless chairman Malcolm Murray is overthrown.

Record Sport revealed earlier this month that the relationship between Green and Murray had completely broken down.

Now we can detail the full extent of the rift which has caused considerable alarm among club directors who had been hoping for a period of stability after bringing in a whopping £22.5million at the turn of the year in a stock market flotation.

Such is the level of concern, both chief executive Green and Murray were ordered to attend a peace summit in London, organised by Cenkos, the firm who oversaw the successful share offering.

They were told to bury the hatchet or risk unnerving the institutional investors who pumped in £17m.

There has been simmering bad blood between the pair for some time but the situation exploded at the first meeting of the new board when Green announced he could no longer work with Murray.

In fact, he went further by delivering an ultimatum, warning he would walk away from his position unless Murray was removed from office.

Greenâ??s address shocked the recently-appointed non-executive directors Ian Hart, Philip Cartmell and Bryan Smart.

Ex-Ibrox boss Walter Smith, also a non-executive director, was not present at the board meeting but has since been told of the developments and is understood to have urged Green to reconsider.

It was Green who appointed pension fund manager Murray in the summer, having been put on to him by finance firm Zeus Capital. At that time the Yorkshireman was struggling to win over a hugely sceptical support.

DUTY

Lifelong Rangers fan Murray helped build a bridge between Green and the fans and his business reputation in London also helped convince the money men to come to the table.

But Green has not seen eye-to-eye with the Scot for a while and seems determined to have him ousted.

A source close to the club said: â??Right now they are limping on together but Charles is a like a dog with a bone and Malcolm knows his position is under threat.

â??In fact, Malcolm would have walked away by now had it been any other post at any other business.

â??Itâ??s only because of his love for the club that heâ??s prepared to dig his heels in and stand his ground. He feels a sense of duty.

â??The situation is unstable and the whole episode is very embarrassing for the club at a time when Rangers should be moving forward together towards stability.

â??This vicious, spiteful in-fighting does not reflect well on anyone.â?

In sharp contrast to the extroverted Green, Murray has kept a low profile since joining the club, speaking in public only occasionally.

Itâ??s understood he further angered Green last week by appearing on Sky TV to discuss the anniversary of the onset of administration.

And there is little or no chance their relationship can be repaired.

It appears Green no longer trusts Murrayâ??s judgment and the two men are preparing for something of a power struggle in the weeks ahead.

Fights in boardroom's are not that uncommon, I know people who have that as their default operational method, it works for them fairly regularly too. We don't know what this one is about yet, perhaps Murray is in the right. A 'him or me' ultimatum surprises me, assuming it's true, you do wonder what subject or direction could cause that level of brinksmanship.
