SFL Board - Their next step

Recommended Posts

The SFL board are apparently due to meet on Thursday. So what do you think that they should do?

I think the smart thing is just to note the outcome of the SPL meeting and do nothing else?

Doncaster has said that the deal was for the entire package and to run with parts of it wasn't a starter. They didn't get the entire package through, so the SPL people don't need to do anything .

The first division clubs, led by the Hamilton chairman have been making noises but realistically, what they can do? The SPL having failed to get their proposals through are unlikely to have the funds that were previously on offer to the first division clubs.

If as most people suspect, the SPL are in soapy bubble over a TV deal, the SFL board are in a strong position.

No matter how devious they are, Doncaster and his crew are boxed in. Milne's face.when he left the meeting betrayed his feelings more powerfully than his harsh words.

I hope that the SFL guys have long memories and grasp that they can afford to be patient. In time, they will get the concessions that they are after without agreeing to the 12-12-18, splits and the zero points nonsense.

Should be an. Interesting time ahead.

I cant work out why chairmen in the SPL and Div1 would feel betrayed, it is a simple choice of opinion and just because others dont agree with their opinion they are acting selfish. Since when should St Mirren vote for what benefits Aberdeen?

The SFL meeting will be interesting this week to see if anyone throws the toys out of the pram. But they should be looking to the SPL for blame who didnt go with fans wishes and create a bigger top division which means some of those clubs would have got promotion. It seesm its all about cash for them also even if it means being in the 2nd tier.

The SFL have a good chance to tidy up their 3 divisions and turn it into 2 leagues and open it up to regional divisions below that. Once the SPL is ready (and they will due to no TV deal) the top division will have to merge into the system SFL have laid out.

SFL clubs make date for crunch talks on a revamp plan that will salvage the reconstruction of Scottish football

17 Apr 2013 07:56

IT'S understood a new package of proposals will be put forward to top-flight clubs which include the idea to ditch the almost universally disliked 12-12-18 plan.

ANXIOUS First Division clubs will meet next week to hatch a “phoenix plan” in a bid to salvage the reconstruction of Scottish football from the embers of meltdown Monday.

But SFL chief executive David Longmuir insisted last night that the discussions – to which SPL relegation certs Dundee will be invited – on Monday will not lead to a hostile breakaway and the creation of an SPL 2.

The clubs, led by Hamilton, are determined to revive the concept of creating a united league body and of a fairer distribution of TV cash, despite seeing the blueprint for change being obliterated at an explosive SPL summit earlier this week.

And Record Sport understands it’s likely to result in a new package of proposals being put forward to top-flight clubs - but one which ditches the almost universally disliked 12-12-18 plan which was

torpedoed by St Mirren and Ross County.

Instead, they seem certain to push for a continuation of current league numbers but with the inclusion of an end-of-season play-off between the club placed second bottom of the top division and the runners-up of the second tier.

Such a plan would certainly please Ross County’s chairman Roy MacGregor who has already spoken of his desire to find a compromise agreement.

It would also seem to tick many of the boxes for St Mirren. But although they could be won over and convinced to vote for change, the First Division clubs may find the SPL clubs are too badly divided to reach an 11-1 majority.

But that won’t stop the latest attempt at securing change and, with around £2million in possible sponsorship cash as a carrot, Longmuir believes not all hope is lost.

He said: “Yes, there will be a meeting of clubs with a view to what can be done to rescue this situation. It’s not about an

SPL 2, a breakaway or any more divisiveness. That’s the kind of negative language which has to be binned. It’s not about a whole raft of teams wishing to resign from one set-up and join another.

“It’s about trying to rebuild bridges so that a bit more money is spread around between clubs under one league body, with play-offs being introduced to the set-up.”

Hamilton chairman Les Gray is furious with the SPL’s decision to KO reconstruction plans and said: “I’m struggling to work out what happened in three months for there to be support for reconstruction and then suddenly there isn’t.

“Scottish football as a business model is broken. The game’s gubbed. I’ll be at the forefront of setting up a meeting to explore all other options.”

I can't see how spreading the TV money down more is "fairer". Maybe nicer, kinder, more benevolent or philanthropic but I just can't see, fairer.

The TV pay to show the top clubs and the fans pay the TV company to watch those top games. What has a bottom half third division club got to do with this equation?

Also I'm coming to the conclusion that football just doesn't understand money or economics from top to bottom - except for the pyramid system of making players richer.

They don't seem to understand that if you give everyone more money, all that happens is that you pay more for the same players. What is the difference with just cutting your cloth accordingly, especially when you're middling teams in lower leagues?

The only time that more money really helps is in infrastructure and non wage running costs. If you can't meet those bills then you're in trouble but after that it's just the same clubs competing for the same standard of player but with more money in their pockets to go to the auction with.

If the SFL re-organised itself into two divisions it would definitely be a step in the right direction. I still don't understand why the SFL didn't try and do their own TV deal last year which involved ourselves. Was it because of the infamous Five Way Agreement?
