Cammy Bell to be unveiled today...

Hey...we have a keeper. The Goale MkII?

Wish Ally had the same 'clout' as Souness (not a criticism)...he has the same idea, buy a goalie first, but because of the situation we find ourselves in our hands are tied to a certain extent. Wouldn't surprise me tho' if our next big signing is a proper CB in the Butcher mould.

That would certainly be a nice touch.

I think that was Frankie that said that...

It certainly was, my apologies. I quoted Frankie and asked the question but never paid enough attention to who replied. My bad.

Anyway, nice to have it confirmed that Bell is cheaper than Alexander. Maybe he never got a signing on fee to add to his fat 3rd tier salary either.

CAMMY BELL took a brief detour as he headed for his Ibrox field of dreams — to thank the man who made him good enough for Scotland and Rangers.

Kilmarnock goalkeeping coach and ex-Gers star Billy Thomson worked tirelessly with Bell for six years.

Mentored him, built him up, brought the best out of him.

Eventually to a level where Light Blues boss Ally McCoist made signing the one-cap Bell on a pre-contract for next season a priority.

It’s why the 26-year-old just had to pop in to see the highly respected Thomson yesterday morning ahead of his press conference unveiling.

Childhood Gers fan Bell — who will now work closely with specialist Jim Stewart — said: “I met Billy this morning and gave him a nice bottle of whisky as a thank-you.

“He’s been great my whole career and brought me on as a goalkeeper.

“He gave me a bit of advice on the move to Rangers, which was to go in and work hard.

“He said it’s a great place, where I’ll be looked after. Billy said he knows I’m good enough to do it — hearing that is a great boost.

“I’m now looking forward to working with Jim Stewart who I’ve worked with before. That will be another big step for me. Hopefully he can bring my career on as well.”

It was a class touch by Bell to think of Thomson on one of the biggest days of his life.

And he’s determined to make sure he also displays his gratitude to McCoist by fighting off any competition for the No1 shirt — from Neil Alexander or anyone else.

That he’s dropping from the SPL to Division Two matters not a jot to him.

Bell said: “It’s an unbelievable feeling. It’s been a long time coming for me.

“It’s the size of the club, it’s still the club it’s always been — it’s huge. The opportunities here are massive, there was never a doubt in my head that Rangers have gone backwards.

“It’s my ambition to eventually play in the SPL and Europe with Rangers.

“There’s always pressure at this club — but I’ve got high standards myself.

“If I want to be a Rangers goalie I will have to produce my very best.

“I realise there have been great goalies in the past.

“I’ve watched them in the past as a kid, the likes of Andy Goram and Allan McGregor who I’ve had the pleasure of working with. Allan’s a great goalie and was fantastic with Rangers.

“If I can get anywhere near as good as them I’ll be on the right path. I need to win people over and prove what I can do day-in, day-out at training first and foremost.

“Rangers are going to have two good goalies whether it’s Neil or someone else.

“It’s up to me to prove I’m good enough to play.

“There’s no guarantees here. I’ve not had any in my career. Kenny Shiels didn’t guarantee me anything at Kilmarnock.

“It’s difficult when you think you’ve got the No1 spot.

“You always want someone at your back to make sure you are completely focused going into games.

“I know Rangers will provide that challenge.”

Anyone joining Rangers now is immediately branded a money-grabber. But Bell resents the idea of anyone believing a bag of gold was the sole reason for him quitting the top flight for the lower leagues. He said: “That’s just not true. I totally disagree with anyone who claims that of me.

“Money’s never been a factor in this at all.

“There were other clubs interested in me. But it was just the sheer size of Rangers.

“I think I’m ambitious because I’ve signed for Rangers. I would totally disagree with anybody who says it was just about money.

“Rangers want to be back in Europe, want to be in the SPL.

“I want to be back in Europe, I want to be back in the SPL with Rangers. So that shows my ambitions.”

Yet, just six years ago playing for anybody looked remote for Bell after he suffered a horror knee injury during a loan spell at Montrose.

He revealed: “The doctor at Kilmarnock had actually told the physio at the time that he didn’t think I’d play again.

“They never told me that until about a year later. That’s how bad my knee was.

“I was out on loan at Montrose at the time. It happened during a game when I was facing a penalty.

“I’d already injured it and was going one way and the boy put the ball the other. I tried to twist back the way and just collapsed. My knee had completely gone.

“It was difficult when I found out the whole situation. The physio at Kilmarnock, Alex McQueen, was brilliant.

“He worked long and hard for a year with me in the gym.

“It was hard work at the time. But that always pays off and I think that’s what I’ve got to get into my head here.

“You get your rewards if you put hard work in.

“That’s what I’m going to do here every day.”
