Naismith to accrington Stanley

Recommended Posts

KAL NAISMITH has gone on trial at English League Two side Accrington Stanley with a view to a permanent move south of the border.

The striker was omitted from the 23-man squad which travelled to Brora for Rangers’ northern tour last Friday and that prompted speculation about his future.

Now it has emerged he is working with James Beattie’s side and he could be in line to switch the Crown Ground after making a first-team breakthrough at Ibrox last season.

Naismith signed a two-year contract extension with the Light Blues back in February and scored three times last season against Forres Mechanics, East Stirlingshire and Elgin City.

But with the arrival of new strikers at Ibrox in the close season he has been told his opportunities are likely to be limited in the next few months.

Jon Daly and Nicky Clark are both players boss Ally McCoist is keen to play regularly and Lee McCulloch and Andy Little scored 51 times between them last term.

That leaves Naismith well down the pecking order and the 21-year-old has been allowed to explore other avenues for the sake of continuing his career development.

Assistant manager Kenny McDowall said: “We’ve allowed Kal to go down to Accrington, where James is the manager.

“He has gone there on trial with a view to maybe moving on because he’s at an age now where he’s got to go and get himself playing football.

“We feel Kal might become frustrated at being in the squad this season but without getting many games.

“He has started pre-season really well and he has worked hard but we just felt we had to be fair to him and give him the opportunity to look elsewhere.”

You have ask why he was given a new contract.

Because otherwise (since January) he would have been free to talk to other clubs. We've been successful enough in acquiring our transfer targets that Naismith is now surplus to requirements. Seems simple enough to me.

He showed a couple of flashes of potential which were largely overshadowed by reckless play when given a relatively decent opportunity last season. Good luck to him though.
