My report on tonight's game

I'd assume that elfideldo will disagree. Just look what Durie does with the u20s. But that probably doesn't count, as it would bust the argument.

Seen the Under 20's have you ?

In that case you will know how seriously the clubs take this league

Well, I read reports - yours included - and see that the u20s challenge for the title. So either Durie is doing something right or our team is as brutal to watch as the first team at times but still good enough to be among the best in Scotland? Somewhere in there one would suspect a contradiction though. I reckon everyone would welcome an insight into state of the various youth teams, of course.

Sectarian hatred, flares and smoke bombs mar Glasgow Cup Final between Celtic and Rangers' youth teams

Apr 29, 2014 03:00 By John Dingwall

THE only Old Firm game of the season was played in a cauldron of sectarian hatred last night.

The match involving Rangers and Celtic youth teams prompted an outpouring of bile to shame Scotland – and violence was only contained by a strong police presence.

The Glasgow Cup final at Celtic Park should have been a showcase of young talent on both

sides, but thugs spoiled the occasion and police feared it would turn into a full-scale riot.

As the match kicked off, a group of Rangers casuals with scarves over their faces and a number of Celtic fans tried to break through segregated areas after goading each other with sectarian songs.

None of these so-called supporters paid any attention to the game, preferring to stand with their backs to the action to spew their venom at their rivals.

A smoke bomb was set off by Celtic fans while Rangers fans threw flares and firecrackers.

Sections of the crowd on both sides spent the first 25 minutes taunting each other and chanting vile messages.

Before the half-hour mark, the media were escorted to safety along with neutrals sandwiched between the opposing fans.

Police and stewards also faced a torrent of hate from sections of the 8000-strong crowd.

Witnesses described the atmosphere as “shocking and disgusting”.

One fan said: “Things turned brutal almost from the off.

“If this is an example of what happens at an Old Firm match involving under-17s, God help

us when the clubs meet for real.”

The Record’s Gordon Parks added: “I’ve covered games for over a decade and have never been so revolted. It’s a kids’ game and should have been the highlight of their footballing careers but the headlines again will be the behaviour of the fans.”

Before the match had even begun, it was clear the police expected trouble and were desperate to keep the rival fans apart.

Visiting Rangers supporters were “kettled” along London Road to prevent any pre-match clashes.

Police action also ensured the trouble was quelled before the final whistle – but Celtic were left counting the cost last night after dozens of seats were ripped up inside the stadium during the game.

Both clubs are now likely to face severe disciplinary action after the game, which Celtic won 1-0.

The disgraceful scenes were a carbon copy of those witnessed in the same fixture a year ago at Partick Thistle’s Firhill ground.

Thugs let off flares and ripped up seats, rival supporters taunted each other during the match and smoke bombs were thrown on the pitch. Seven fans were arrested.

DR

Maybe the police and stewards should do their jobs more properly, while the authorities should have made that game a u15 and above 50/family affair. No need for "Ultras" at a u17 game.

They are not ultras but seriously this would have been the first taste of old firm football for some of these idiots, these kids probably have never been allowed to go to a real old firm match.

I was at the Cup final last season at Firhill and it was the same wee boys embarrassing themselves and the club and some grown men acting the same.

These guys are embarrassing to anyone associated with either club. Sadly, most of the online fanbase on both sides think that their ultras are not as bad as the others, reality is that anyone subscribing to this ultra logic will have mental issues.

So you haven't seen the U 20's but you know Durie is doing a great job. Wolves are clear in League 1, I'm sure their website says Kenny Jacket is doing wonderful, but as I haven't seen them I won't comment.

The League table doesn't lie, but sometimes its worth looking behind it.

among the best in Scotland

The better Under 20 players are generally in and around their first team or farmed out on loan for experience.

FirstlyI hope Rangers win this league, but actually it means feck all. Its supposed to be about development, but is it a youth league ? Take the last game against Hearts, Rangers fielded Ross Perry, Chris Hegarty and Andy Little, if reports are to be believed two will not have their contracts renewed, while the other is not quoted in terms of first team. Meanwhile Dylan Dykes, Darren Ramsay, Scott Roberts are unused subs, Jamie Burrows got 15 minutes and Greg Pascazio got ONE. This was against a Hearts Under 18 side !!

Generally Rangers use the overage quota, the better performances have come in the youth cup where no overage players are allowed.

As I said the better under 20 players don't play very often in this league, circumstances meant Hearts and Dunfermline had 6 or 7 in this bracket, other clubs have three or four near the first team. so the Under 20 league is hardly a priority. Its no coincidence that Dunfermline's results picked up after they signed a few experienced players in January, this allowed their better youth players to drop into the Under 20 League.

Dundee United have FIVE Under 20 players out on loan, four of them having played against Rangers in League One, Aberdeen have three out on loan, all who have played against us in League One.

It looks like the league will go down to a decider against Celtic, what will their team be ? The following Under 20 players will be unavailable to them. Joe Chalmers (Falkirk), Paul George (Hamilton Accies), Stuart Findlay (Morton), Lewis Kidd (Queen Of The South), Michael Miller (Dumbarton), all on loan at Championship clubs.

I'm not fan of this "youth League", at least when it was under 18 the clubs generally played the strongest possible team at that age group.

As I said, I read your reports (sic!) and those on the website, aside from looking at the league table. And there was a hint of irony in my remark about Durie and the league table ...

NB: The Hearts game aside, I seem to remember from your reports that a large quantity of u20 games was played without that many overage folk (Perry, Hegarty, Hutton et al were injured for nigh the entire season), even though I reckon that twe can't field that many overaged folk anyway. There is sure consensus that the u20 league should not be a place for ailing first-teamers.
