I think that's a fair comment.

 

I'd be interested in comparisons from the 1980s (and early 70s) which we both ahead of my time.

 

Did fans just drift away or did they force change? What part did nigh net worth investors play then?

 

The 80s was a while ago but if my memory is accurate there was no forcing of change and concerted effort on the part of the fans. People simply stopped turning up to watch rubbish. The impetus for change came from the top in response to the drifting away of the support but there certainly weren't any demonstrations or groundswell of protest.

 

i don't think it would be fair to lump in the early 70s here. We did actually have a very good team at the time - in fact I think we won some sort of international competition round about then ;) - we just happened to be up against one of the best teams in Europe at the time.
