Probe as football fans post messages stating the IRA should be drafted in to "sort" out Celtic manager Ronny Deila's side

A group of football fans are under investigation by police after messages were posted online stating Irish Republican terrorists should be drafted in to "sort" Ronny Deila's struggling Celtic side.

A host of hate-filled messages were posted on a Celtic fans forum hours after the Hoops lost 2-1 to Aberdeen in Pittodrie.

The posts, which were written under the heading "Time for the IRA to step in" - stunned fans on the Huddleboard website.

However, some other vile supporters backed the message and one added: "Could be worth a try, maybe they play better kneecapped."

Another simply wrote: "Send them in."

Deila saw his side's top-flight lead cut to just three points on Wednesday night as the Hoops crashed to a second consecutive defeat following their 3-1 hammering by Ross County in Sunday's league cup semi-final.

The series of embarrassing losses have blown Deila's chances of a domestic treble, sparking calls for him to be sacked from some fans.

One police source blasted the bigoted bile and said: "Of course fans are entitled to be upset after two consecutive losses but these messages are completely unacceptable.

"Writing that anyone should be shot or kneecapped is deplorable.

"These individuals will be tracked down and an investigation is already under way to trace whoever is responsible."

In the Huddleboard post, under the name PeterK, the fan who started the thread, wrote: "Time for the IRA to step in and sort this mess out."

The Evening Times understands specialist police officers are now working to identify the individuals behind the posts.

A Police Scotland spokesman told the Evening Times: "Police Scotland are aware and are investigating."

I don't condone this but where is the border on what you can say. If I say Miller should be hung for missing that chance. I don't actually mean he should be hung. We really need to watch what we are wishing in these sort of incidents because the borderline is getting extremely near things we all just say as a joke.

Could Freddie Mercury still sing "Mamma I've just killed a man"without getting huckled.

I think while it looks like banter, it is a public forum and so could plausibly incite some other moron into taking it seriously and committing a violent act.

People seem to forget they are broadcasting their words, just like newspapers, tv and radio, and some caution and responsibility is required. It is NOT the same as chatting with your mates in private. This is the equivalent of a megaphone...

However, for me, it should be treated as nothing more than a trivial misdemeanour.

It never ceases to amaze me that some folk seem so concerned about the antics of the more moronic elements of Celtic and other team's supporters, if they are supporters at all.

There is no doubt whatsoever that tweets of this nature are offences under the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012 because:

Under Section (2) Condition A

the material consists of, contains or implies a threat, or an incitement, to carry out a seriously violent act against a person or against persons of a particular description, and the person communicating the material—

(i)intends by doing so to cause fear or alarm, or

(ii)is reckless as to whether the communication of the material would cause fear or alarm.

so hopefully those repsonsible will be apprehended and prosectuted to the full extent of the law.

What is perhaps more instructive from a football perspective is the wrath of the Celtic fans after two not entirely unpredictable losses against teams in the top four of the league. In all honesty Celtic losing 2-1 at Pittodrie should not be seen as a disaster by Celtic fans but it is perhaps the manner of their defeat and their apparent inability to turn their overwhelming resources into overwhelming superiority at home following their worst ever European group stage campaign that is causing all the angst. Their scatter gun signing policy e.g. Ciftci and Allan and inconsistent team selection don't seem to be helping them.

It would be wonderful for Scottish football if Aberdeen were to win the League and what is clear is that despite our years in the wilderness Celtic are by no means as far ahead of us as many predicted.
