Joey Barton banned from football for 18 months

Recommended Posts

The balance of football punishments isnt correct. Cantona kicks a fan and got what 7 months out?

But Barton is stupid for betting on any game he played in. Ive no issue if players have a flutter on the Grand National or other sports. Yet football contradicts itself with the amount of betting companies sponsoring the game.

As for Barton he just seems to attract trouble everywhere.

I don't see what is wrong with players betting, nothing wrong with betting your own team to win, however if you are betting on your own team to lose then obviously that is a problem, if gambling is so wrong then why have gambling companies as sponsors in football?

In other occupations it would, in all likelihood, be held to be a potential conflict of interest.

The problem, in practice, is that if you allow players to bet on matches , that privilege is likely to be abused; from the use of 'inside' information on the player's own team, or, perhaps exchanged between mates, who play elsewhere, for the opposition, say, on form, injuries, tactics, the star striker's marital issues, and so on, akin to 'insider trading', through 'spot fixing' or influencing the no. of fouls, throw ins, corners, cards, own goals etc., to full blown match fixing.

The temptation to indulge in such behaviour would be increased by lack of success in the betting market.
