How will we line up next season?

Recommended Posts

Could Wallace play on the left of a back 3? If so he could be put in but I wouldnt want to see him as our left wing back. Id prefer more offensive type player.

I would give Hodson his chance in a back three if that's how we are going. He is much more defensive than the others. Beerman and Wallace bombing forward for e.g.

3-1-4-2 perhaps?

More likely 3-1-3-1-2 though with a Diamond. This requires both thought and movement though? We have little of the former and not much of the latter at the moment.

I think it will definitely be a 4-2-3-1 with Pedro, with a few changes here and there depending on the opposition. Our current "best" side in this set-up is probably:

Foderingham

Tavernier - Bates - Wilson - Wallace

Holt - Toral

Waghorn - Miller - McKay

Garner

Clearly, there are a few players (a) not good enough, and (b) playing out of position (or © leaving!). I don't know where to start? We need new CBs, FBs, DMs, RM, AMs and STs.

I think we really need a couple of strong, imposing (with ability to pass) DMs as priority; take care of that and our defense is passable. We need someone to finish too, but I still think Garner could still work if we play to his strengths as PC indicated.

We're not going to be able to replace the entire squad.

I agree that PC fancies Garner. I think he has been told as such too. Hopefully his confidence will grow and there is a good/consistent player in there? His work ethic is exemplary.

Its difficult to tell, I think there will be an overhaul of the squad though.

Goalkeepers

It would be harsh to get shot of Fod's, he is prone to lapses in concentration and he should come off his line more to take the ball from crosses but he is capable of some spectacular saves and has shown a massive improvement in the time he has been here. Alnwick im not sure about or never seen him play, I know he was quite highly regarded down south and im sure PC and his team have seen enough of him to know if he is an able replacement. I think Liam Kelly will come back from Livingston to make up the goalkeepers in the squad, again, never seen him play but has done really well at Livingston by all accounts, I would say we look ok in that department.

Defenders

Get Left back out the way right off, Wallace and Beerman are good enough to fill that berth for the time being and that position does not need immediate attention IMO.

Right back, I would keep Tav, I know he gets a hard time, I think he offers so much going forward that im prepared to forgive his defensive lapses, with a decent DM as well I think we will concede fewer from him marauding forward. I would also take a punt on Paterson from Hearts, I know he is injured but he is on a free, would be a development fee and he is a decent player. I also think if we wanted to be more solid, moving him to RB and Tav to RM would give us more stability in games where it was required.

From the current Centre Backs I would only keep Wilson and Bates, both have held their own since Pedro came in and are deserving of keeping there place in the squad. If reports are correct we are going for Bruno Alves and Rachid Sumilia (spelling) then I hope this will further bolster our defence, Sumilia is some what an unknown quantity, but from what I have seen he looks pretty quick, which will allow us to play a high line, something we really can't do with our current defenders. I don't think I need to big up Alves either, experienced imposing center half, would be a great signing if we could get him. The question is do you add another center half to that and let Bates float between the development team or the first team, I would like to think two strong center halfs would be enough to solidify the defence.

On top of Hill's and Senderos's contracts expiring I would also get rid of Kiernan and Hodson if possible, both have done ok, but if we want to move up a level then we need to move these guys on.

Midfielders

With Hyndman and Toral going it leaves us a bit light in midfield, but it is a position we have been pretty light in all season, there is no bite and no aggression.

Im glad Rossiter and Kranjcar are getting back to full fitness it will give us something different in midfield, Rossiter looked a player when he played earlier in the season, Energy, aggression and composure, he came with a good pedigree and if we can keep him fit he will be a key player for us. Same with Kranjcar, definitely won't start every game, but what an option to have from the bench, the guy is class, can make something out of nothing and can dig a ball from outside the box.

It looks like PC will keep Windass, I think he needs to get his finger out though, his work rate is questionable sometimes and he has lost his man a number of times in the last couple of weeks and its resulted in us conceding goals or gifting the opposition a shot on goal. I also think he will keep Holt, the wee mans work rate is good but he is one that I think can look busy sometimes and not do very much, he is also prone to giving the ball away very easily and not making the simple pass. Maybe im being to harsh on him because he is adapting to a new position if an offer came in I would let him go, but would be happy if he stayed. Along with Hyndman and Toral leaving I would also try and get Andy Halliday out the door, good bluenose, but that's not enough, he isn't cut out for this level and its shown the last couple of times he has played, still not sure about big crooks either, seems to be doing ok for Scunthorpe but is always injured.

I would hope the youngsters are in about the team again this year, would like to see more of Barjonas and Burt in around the team, it also sink or swim time for Jordan Thompson, came with a lot of plaudits from Man U and I think everyone thought it was a surprise we got him, he needs to show what he can do.

On the transfer front it looks like we have agreed a deal to sign Ryan Jack, decent enough signing in a position we really need strengthening, can also fill in at RB if required. As Davie P stated above can drop in to a back 3 when we are attacking to provide cover.

Out with that I would also try and get Jamie Walker from Hearts, can play RM, LM or AMC, top player in our league, provides goals and assists, there is an interesting article from Dougie Wright on Twitter, I think its published on the Clyde SSb website on shooting from distance, this is something Walker is good at, however I heard that Hearts want around 3 mill for him, there is no chance we will pay that, nor should we, I think he is in the final year of his contract, if a deal could be done I think he would be a good addition.

It is maybe still a bit light and we could probably do with a bit more in midfield, im just not sure how much cash we have an PC has been pretty good at playing his cards close to his chest.

Forwards

First of all, get rid of Forrester, Waghorn and O'Halloran if possible. I'm torn about Hardie, I want it to work for him, I don't think he will cut it though, I don't know if a loan to a Premiership team will do him good, say a Partick or a Hamilton, maybe somewhere he can get a regular game at this level, it would be if they want to take a punt on him though. I would also maybe try and get Dodoo a loan where he can play every week, I think PC likes him, I like him as well, I just think he needs a good run of games to get some proper experience.

Garner looks like he is going to get a good run next year and it looks like Pedro is going to play to his strengths, I like him, he gives his all, a lot of his work goes unnoticed as well I think, he must be a nightmare to play against, he looks like he will score a few if you fling balls in to the box. Similar to Miller, I would think he would maybe be taking a back seat next year, but you never know, I didn't think he would be so influential this year, again a great experienced option from the bench.

Wee McKay, again been blowing hot and cold this season but it looks like Pedro has got through to him in the last couple of weeks, he is probably the most gifted footballer technically, maybe with the exception of Kranjcar, and is stalling on a contract at the minute, hopefully that gets resolved and we can get him signed up, if he drags his heels just get shot of him.

As for signings, I know he divides opinion on here but if speculation is correct an he is willing to take a massive pay cut to play here then I think Naismith is a no brainer, he is miles better than anything we have up front at the minute, can play up top or drop in behind the striker, he makes things happen.

Just on the lafferty thing, there is no way he should be anywhere near rangers, a lanky Waghorn as far as I'm concerned, Hodson should be punted for even suggesting he should be back here.

As for other strikers iv seen a few mentioned, Moult maybe from the SPL, I think that shows a bit of a lack of ambition, cheap option, he could score goals, but would be able make the step up to playing in a bigger team, I was hoping Rangers would go for Solanke a couple of months ago, but it looks like he is going to Celtic now, I heard he turned down a contract with Chelsea and was after 50k a week, way out our price range. I'm sure there is a number of good bosmans we could pick up, however as stated above I think this is the most important position we need to fill, I would rather spend decent money and get someone who can guarantee us 25-30 goals a season.

Sorry if that was a bit long winded

So in Summary

Goalkeepers

Foderingham, Alnwick, Kelly

Defenders

Wilson, Bates, Wallace, Tavernier, Beerman, Alves, Sumalia, Paterson

Midfielders

Rossiter, Kranjcar, Windass, Holt, Jack, Walker

Forwards

Garner, Miller, McKay,Naismith

Even looking at that I think we still look a bit light and could do with fattening out the squad a bit but its a start :crest
