Gordon Smith open letter to Dave King

So you would be happy for us never playing at Europe's top table ? Because that is what it would mean when our co-efficient sinks; we won't be seeded and will meet the big teams far sooner.

Scottish teams have enough trouble getting past the wee teams.....big teams are a non-issue ;)

Is that really so?

That is what they wrote ... http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/newsid=2398899.html#/photos/

Changes

The UEFA Europa League winners will automatically qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage (currently they can potentially take part in a play-off round).

The top four clubs from the four top-ranked national associations will now qualify automatically for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.

The full details of the access list for both competitions will be finalised by the end of the year.

A new system for the club coefficients: clubs will be judged on their own records (deletion of the country share for individual club coefficient unless that coefficient is lower than 20% of the association's coefficient).

Historical success in the competition will also be acknowledged in coefficient calculation (points for previous European titles with a weighted system for UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League titles)

Financial distribution to clubs will be increased significantly for both competitions.

A new four-pillar financial distribution system (starting fee, performance in the competition, individual club coefficient and market pool) will see sporting performances better rewarded, while market pool share will decrease.

What doesn't change

Retention of Champions and League route of qualifying in the UEFA Champions League, ensuring that clubs from all associations can enter through their domestic leagues and qualify for both competitions.

The UEFA Champions League will continue to have a 32-team group stage leading to a 16-club knockout phase. Similarly the UEFA Europa League remains at 48 teams.

A subsidiary company will be created that will play a strategic role in determining the future and the management of club competitions: UEFA Club Competitions SA, where half of the managing directors will be appointed by UEFA and the other half by the ECA.

Speaking about the amendments agreed for the new cycle, UEFA General Secretary ad interim Theodore Theodoridis said: "The evolution of UEFA's club competitions is the result of a wide-ranging consultative process involving all stakeholders and taking into account a wide range of expertise and perspectives.

"The amendments made will continue to ensure qualification based on sporting merit, and the right of all associations and their clubs to compete in Europe's elite club competitions.

"We are happy that European football remains united behind the concepts of solidarity, fair competition, fair distribution and good governance."

You do realize that as of next season the country coefficient points are irrelevant and it is only a club's points that matter ?

You do realize that what you are looking for is Celtic to obtain a further 30 million quid advantage over us ?

Our position at Europe's top table is a million miles away - and even more so if Celtic continue to get to the group stages of the CL and obtain 20-30 million quid each season.

Whilst you suggest that supporting Celtic's European exploits as some reason of helping Rangers you are completely ignoring that every season they have a successful season pushes them even further ahead of us. And makes it even more of a certainty that they will be Scotland's representatives in the CL the following season.

So, no, I don't want Celtic doing well.

At some point you will perhaps come to realize that the best chance we have of catching and overtaking Celtic and becoming Scotland's top club again is actually if they have continual European failures. If they don't have CL money they will have to cut their cloth accordingly. The CL money they keep receiving allows them each season to spend more money on one or two players than we can spend on our whole squad.

Personally, I believe that your logic is flawed - if Celtic do well they get a massive financial boost which can then be used to extend their advantage over us. If they fail, they don't have nearly the same resource to be able to do so. A few years of being dumped out of Europe would see their financial position vastly weakened, which in turn would mean their ability for multi-million pound signings would be vastly weakened and their ability to pay players and management over 30k a week would be vastly weakened.

So, do I wish Celtic to do well in Europe, thus allowing them an even greater advantage than us - in the off chance that we get lucky and beat them to the league in a season ? No. I would much rather they fail miserably in Europe and have to cut their cloth, thus pulling them back closer to us, which in turn makes us more competitive and gives us a chance at winning the league and entering the CL. Sure, it may be the qualifiers and we may indeed go out - but we would be curtailing THEIR opportunity for increased revenue too.

It always confuses me when I hear this "We need Celtic to do well in Europe" argument - because if they do well it benefits us not one bit so long as they still win the league - indeed, it hinders and hurts us. I just don't get the argument at all..

PS : In order to get to Europe's top table again we need to become the top club in Scotland. How do you propose we do that if we give Celtic a 20-30 million advantage every year ? So long as they make the wise choice of hiring a good manager who knows what he is doing then 20-30 million excess a year is half a team of 4-5 million pound signings. How do you suggest we overcome that each and every year ?

On a sidenote, I wonder how much the Yahoos actually got from last season's campaign. The figures of 30m were IIRC to best version of it. They will probably be awash with cash when they sell Dembele and perhaps even Armstrong. As with our guys, it remains to be seen how any new guys get on and whether they can stay virtually injury free as they did last season. And then there is the CooP stuff coming round next year too.

If they sell Armstrong I don't think they'll get a lot of money. Dembele £8m or around that. So not that awash.
