Dundee United deny responsibility for Rangers new club jibe

DAVID GUNN

Dundee United deny they had anything to do with a jibe at Rangers in the matchday programme for their Irn-Bru Cup match with Linfield.

The publication made reference to the “new club” argument by calling Saturday’s opponents “the most successful team in the world still in existence”.

Linfield have 52 league titles to their name, two fewer than Rangers before the liquidation event in 2012.

United, though, insist they have no input into the context of the matchday programme.

A club spokesman told the Daily Record: “Our matchday magazine is outsourced to an independent editor who has his own volunteer writers and the club has no editorial input into the magazine.

“Having spoken to the editor he informs us that the introduction information relating to Linfield was put together from various information sources, including the internet, and was intended to promote the achievements of our visitors Linfield.”

There is an "liquidation event" in connection with our club? And the internet sources these "volunteer Arabs" used say Linfield is the most successful team out there? Really. Which sites may that be? The same journo had an article out there about Linfield fans "blaming" Rangers fans for sectarian songs being sung on Saturday, giving the Belfast Herald as the source of that, who actually found these lamentations on fan-boards and twitter, which is full of real life characters, as we know. And he kindly ignored the praise by Linfield FC for our fans and their support at the game. Wonder of wonders.

That is the reality of Fake News just now: some fake profiles make comments online and papers / 'journalists' who want to run a derogatory story only have to use these as 'sources'.

All this is just another small piece in the anti-Rangers campaign that's been running against us for several years now.

Have a look on the newsnow site today or any other day. The headlines are full of nonentities commenting on Rangers - that tells you all you need to know. These dumplings wouldn't be quoted unless some "journalist" hadn't asked the question.

I'd hoped when King and his pals arrived we'd address it. But it looks as though all he's interested in is looking after his and his boards reputation.

I'd just hope that whatever money Traynor is getting paid isn't coming from my season ticket cash. He's been fecking useless so far.

Yes, Oldco is "in liquidation".

We've been through this about a thousand times, so you should know it was a rhethorical question. In any case, by mentioning Rangers and liquidation without any other context suggest the author - on purpose - implies that the "club" was liquidated, rather than the OldCo being in liquidation. Thus, while pointing out the "error" in the Arab scribblings, he himself caters to our detractors. Given his previous articles, no wonder there. If only I were in our media department ...

What they said wasn't incorrect. Oldco is in liquidation. We can't hide from that fact and if someone wants to beat us with it then we just have to bear it.

We have enough trouble criticising people for the incorrect stuff but when they get it right, there's not much we can do.

It is not what IMHO the author is aluding to, as I explained.

Just in case, same author, different story, same tune:

Linfield supporters blame Rangers fans for sectarian chants

DAVID GUNN

Linfield fans have blamed supporters of Rangers for sectarian chanting during their side’s recent 1-0 defeat to Dundee United.

The match at Tannadice, played live in front of BBC Alba’s cameras, was marred by the singing of several sectarian songs, which were clearly audible on the broadcast, including one in reference to deceased IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands.

Linfield fans insist these chants didn’t come from the group of supporters who travelled from Belfast to see the game, but instead local Rangers supporters who turned up in the hope of causing trouble.

One Linfield fan told the Belfast Telegraph: “It was clear from the accents that there were a lot of Rangers’ people there. No one is saying that our own supporters are angels but the club have tried to move away from the old sectarian stereotypes and songs.

“Obviously there were problems at the Celtic game in July but the supporters who came over from Belfast on Saturday were paying a lot of money to be there and they weren’t out for trouble. Many of them wouldn’t even know the words of the sounds that were being sung at their end of the ground.”

Another wrote on social media: “Sounds like our ‘Scottish’ supporters club are lending some vocal support. I wish they would **** off and stick to their own team.”

The actual article in the Belfast Herald:

Linfield fans' anger over Rangers sectarian chants

Supporters denounce singing of sectarian songs in Dundee

By Staff Reporter October 9 2017

A number of Linfield fans have denounced supporters of Rangers for singing sectarian songs, including The Billy Boys, at a game the Belfast club were playing in Dundee at the weekend.

The strains of several contentious songs, including one mocking the late IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands, could clearly be heard as the Blues faced Dundee United in a Scottish Challenge Cup game at Tannadice on Saturday.

The match, which Linfield lost 1-0 to a goal in the last minute, was attended by less than 2,000 people and it was broadcast live on BBC Alba, which is a Scottish Gaelic language digital station.

Linfield fans who travelled to Tayside from Northern Ireland have blamed Rangers supporters for singing the controversial songs, which also included ones which are normally associated with the Glasgow club like Rule Britannia and I was born under a Union Jack.

One Linfield fan said: "It was clear from the accents that there were a lot of Rangers' people there. No one is saying that our own supporters are angels but the club have tried to move away from the old sectarian stereotypes and songs.

"Obviously there were problems at the Celtic game in July but the supporters who came over from Belfast on Saturday were paying a lot of money to be there and they weren't out for trouble. Many of them wouldn't even know the words of the songs that were being sung at their end of the ground."

Rangers fans have been critical of Dundee United for their attitude to the Glasgow club during their financial crisis, which saw them demoted to the lower divisions of Scottish football.

In December 2012 Rangers supporters boycotted an away game in the Scottish Cup against Dundee United, with the Tannadice club's chairman, Stephen Thompson, coming in for particularly vitriolic abuse.

But in recent weeks on social media sites, it's been revealed that Rangers fans were planning to visit Dundee to support Linfield who, like the Scottish club, have a largely Protestant fan-base.

As Saturday's match progressed, a number of Linfield fans posted messages on football forums and social media criticising the Rangers supporters for their songs and chants.

"They are seriously embarrassing our club," said one Linfield fan.

Another said "Sounds like our 'Scottish' supporters club are lending some vocal support. I wish they would **** off and stick to their own team."

It was also pointed out that insults were levelled at Saturday's game towards Stephen Thompson. "And that wasn't coming from people from Belfast," said a Linfield supporter.

On several occasions Dundee United fans burst into anti-Rangers chants.

On one website yesterday a Cliftonville supporter applauded his Linfield counterparts for their condemnation of the Rangers fans.

He wrote: "Very impressed with those who disowned the Rangers support. The peace process must be working! Fair play!"

But there was criticism of an official Linfield FC Twitter account which thanked the Rangers fans for "coming down from Glasgow to support us, our friendship with Scotland's most successful club is special".

The BH speaks a financial crisis, "Linfield supporters on fan-boards and twitter" et al. Did we find that in Gunn's article? Did he mention that Linfield FC praised our supporters for the support? I dont think I'm paranoid here when saying that Gunn chose his words carefully, as he did with the "Rangers liquidation event".
