Gers Confirm Cummings Signing

GRADO is thrilled buddy Jason Cummings is back home in Scotland.
But here’s a question for the telly wrestler to grapple with. Can his close pal be the new Leigh Griffiths?

The parallels so far are startling.
Both roared on to the scene as kids with a hatful of goals, mostly scored in Scotland’s second tier.
Self-proclaimed ‘King of Zing’ Cummings has a left peg almost the match of Griffiths’ stronger foot.
The two strikers were both lured down to Midlands clubs with rich histories but dubious presents.
Neither fulfilled their true potential in England. Griffiths’ best spell with Wolves was in the third tier, while Cummings has netted just one Championship goal.
It doesn’t make them bad players. Sometimes it’s just a case of wrong club, wrong time.
Only when Griff returned home, initially on loan, did he rediscover the form which has now earned him the No9 jerseys for Celtic and Scotland.
Now Cummings has come back, again in a temporary capacity, and has designs on making it big for Rangers and Scotland.
Five years Griff’s junior, Cummings — whose Hibs debut came just five months after Griffiths played his last game for his boyhood idols — still has the tricky bit to do.
He’s still got to make the kind of impact which Griffiths made when picked up by one half of the Old Firm.

The Hoops star has landed four titles, three League Cups, a Scottish Cup, and two Player of the Year awards.
He also flashed two free-kicks beyond Joe Hart to earn the eternal praise of the Tartan Army.
By contrast, Cummings has so far won only a Championship title medal, a Scottish Cup, and a solitary Scotland cap for three minutes off the bench.
But consider where Griffiths was five years ago, and ask yourself whether Cummings can scale those heights after sealing a homecoming.
Five years ago this week, Griff was rescuing a point for Hibs in a low-key draw against Dundee. Like Cummings now, he’d won just a single Scotland cap.
He had yet to play in a Cup Final for Hibs against Celts, or win the cap in Croatia under Gordon Strachan which truly launched him on the international scene.
He had not hit the 13 goals for Wolves in England’s League One which persuaded the Hoops to take a gamble on him. A gamble which has paid off handsomely.

Cummings has bagged just five goals for Nottingham Forest, four in the EFL Cup, but has endured the same struggles as Griffiths.
The gaffer who took him to the City Ground, former Gers boss Mark Warburton, has been axed in favour of Aitor Karanka.
Cummings hasn’t started a game since last October, and hasn’t kicked a ball in anger this year.
But there can be no disguising the talent which made him one of the country’s most sought-after frontmen last summer.
If Graeme Murty can bring back the spark, it won’t just be Grado who’s delighted to see him back north of the border.
It’s a deal which makes perfect sense for all parties. Cummings needs game time.

Gers need more attacking options with Kenny Miller crocked and Eduardo Herrera heading out.
Scotland boss-in-waiting Michael O’Neill wouldn’t argue with Cummings getting a regular game either to broaden his own options.
It took long enough for Griffiths to convince he should lead the line, but he’s not looked back in the past year.
Murty’s mid-winter work has exceeded anything Gers fans could have reasonably expected.

Sean Goss is untested up here, but Jamie Murphy looks like a good signing. Put it this way, he’ll be better than Dalcio if they play him blindfolded!
Russell Martin faded from Gordon Strachan’s plans towards the end his Scotland reign, but looks more sturdy and reliable than Bruno Alves.
I simply can’t see the downside of taking Steven Naismith for nothing.
Murty might have to if Kilmarnock and Hamilton keep repelling his bids for Jordan Jones and Greg Docherty.
But Cummings is the most intriguing and exciting of all the January deals. He looks full of beans.

The ridicule Dalcio gets is rather silly. He hardly ever played for the first team for months, but everyone seems to know how he performs in training et al and thus knows that he's a dud. Sitting Dud ...

Can't see either Alves, Cardoso or Herrera leaving as of now, BTW.

His lack of appearances on the pitch and on the bench give a fair indicator of his performances in training.

Rangers new boy Jason Cummings wasn’t given a chance at Nottingham Forest says City Ground legend Kenny Burns

Double European Cup winner Burns reckons former Hibs star needed time to adapt to life in English Championship

NOTTINGHAM FOREST legend Kenny Burns says Rangers new boy Jason Cummings wasn’t given a chance at the club – and fears his fellow Scot has played his last game for the Reds.

Cummings, signed by axed gaffer Mark Warburton, completed a loan switch to Ibrox this week.

Double European Cup winner Burns reckons the former Hibs star needed time to adapt to life in the English Championship.

Writing in the Nottingham Post, he admitted the move shocked him.

The 64-year-old said: “I am a bit surprised we let him go, though.

“If it was up to me, I would have kept him at Forest, simply because of his energy.

“He’s a busy player and you need that – even if it’s coming off the bench when other players are tiring.

“He plays on people’s shoulders and he’s lively.

“He’s sharp, and one thing we’ve not got in the team at the minute is sharpness.”

The shock FA Cup victory over Arsenal was the only highlight over the festive period for Forest who haven’t got won in the league since December 9.

Burns, on the books at Gers as a youngster before heading south, said: “He’s not really had a chance at the City Ground, though.

“Mark Warburton brought him in last summer and then hardly played him, which seems like a bit of a waste of time.

“Then when he wasn’t involved in Aitor Karanka’s first game in charge, against Aston Villa last weekend, it seemed like it wasn’t going to be much different for him under the new manager.

“Players want to play games, so you can’t blame him if he wanted to go elsewhere.

“I just think he should have been given more of a chance at Forest.”

The switch could become permanent in the summer should the Light Blues take up their option to buy.

Ex-Scotland stopper Burns – a key player in Brian Clough’s iconic side – added: “I suspect he’s played his last game for Forest.”
