I don't know why I'm bothering, but... no, it's not "nonsensical" or "stupid"; there's a logical reason for it. It's to avoid a situation where a player is flagged off, but replays show he was on. Linesman keeps flag down, player scores, then they check it. If Salah is played through last night, and the linesman puts the flag up, but it turns out Salah is actually onside, then that ruins the move and the game. Goal chopped off incorrectly. It's logical and actually works quite well. Players should play to the whistle. Surely fans would be far more annoyed if if a player was incorrectly flagged immediately and it stopped a goalscoring chance? Let the move play out then review it. Saying that, it does annoy me when linesmen keep the flag down when players are so clearly offside. It should be used like the advantage system. It would be good if it came down to the last game of the season at the Cottage when Newcastle go there.
