We won't qualify but with Walter Smith and some exciting younger players we can achieve the realistic primary aim of lowering our coefficient enough to be seeded better for the WC 2010 qualifing draw.

We have to start somewhere and the games against France and Italy will give these young players superb experience for future campaigns and hopefully finals participation.

I think Scotland will struggle in what is a very hard qualifying group. I hope WS takes the chance to establish young players like Stevie Smith, Burke and Boyd into the team with a view to qualifying for the next world cup. I would be great to qualify for the Euro's but I'd like to see us concentrate on the WC and do all we can to ensure we qualify for that.

I don't think we've got any chance of qualifying for the EC but let's hope we do ourselves proud in what is the hardest group of the lot.

I agree with Frankie, the main thing is to give a good account of ourselves, get some points in the bag and improve our coefficient for the next draw. And we should do that by bringing on all the promising young players we have and grooming them for the future.

Of course we'll also have to keep some experience in the team for the young ones to learn from and keep the results coming in.

I think the good thing is that with Smith as manager, if we don't punch abover our weight we should at least punch at it. Under Vogts, the players availlable weren't great but he seemed to make them worse than they already were...
