Likely first choice XI

Recommended Posts

Does anyone think WS doesnt actually know what starting XI he would like? I think he doesnt know what formation to use either which throws his decision. I think He knows his back 4 plus keeper but thats it.

Im worried he is going to use Whittaker as a midfielder next season which baffles me.

If you take our current personnel then 4-3-3 is the best choice for me. I dont know enough about Lafferty yet to comment but im hoping the 3.5 million price tag lives up to expectation. But at the moment id look at something like this when Ferguson is fit:

________________________McGregor_______________________

_Whittaker__________Cuellar________Weir_____________Papac_

___________Ferguson______Hemdani_______Thomson__________

_______Novo______________Velicka______________Beasley_____

I like Cousin as a player but obviously his attitude is wrong, but if that was sorted then he would be accomodated in the team for sure. Cousin and Velicka would be a great pairing. However you know Miller, McCulloch and Adam will feature at the moment. I liked McCulloch before but since the turn of the year he has been so sluggish. Miller is a good worker and I like him but I think Velicka and Cousin are by far better. Adam....almost no comment! He is nowhere near good or consistant enough.

^^ I think you're right - WS doesn't even know his formation, the friendlies tell us that. I know he's never had his full squad available, but you'd have at least thought we'd get a clue from the pre-season games. We can take it Miller will start, but it seems he'll be deployed on the left like v. Schalke and Raith yeterday. Because of the sheer numbers of strikers, and the dearth of midfielders, 4-3-3 makes sense. So your team isn't far out. Main area of debate is left flank - Beasley/Lafferty (though he can play anywhere up front)/Fleck. Don't forget also, though you don't like him, Adam is our best set-piece 'specialist.'! And we may need these free kicks etc. more than ever.

Im inclined to agree however i would like to see fleck and furman figure more and definately employ the 4-3-3 i personally think Velicka will do the damage and he must start

Id be inclined to say who will guarantee us goals but thats just starting another Boyd thread.

Id love us to have the personell to playy 442 with Boyd and Velicka up front. Furman must be in with a shout as apart from him and Adam, do we have any attacking midfielders?

If your good enough, your old enough. Ive said the same thing for a long time.

Defo, Ferguson is a good example of that also i liked what i saw of the two youngsters last season Furman came on v Dundee utd and played well for the limited time he was on he was moving into space and creating well which was a breath of fresh air, as for attackin midfielders, well i think thas where we are lacking

I think I would have a front 3 of Velicka, Boyd and Miller. Velicka can provide chances, Miller can do the donkey work and Boyd would do nothing except score goals......

Novo to come off the bench along with JCD as impact players.

Defence and GK pick themselves - again - and the midfield right now would probably be as you have Gribz, except BF would be central with BH playing on the right.

I just cant see WS going 4-3-3 though.

TBH that team worries me, even with Ferguson fit. I just don't see where the creativity is going to come from and I'm not sure the 4-3-3 is as positive as it looks on paper as you often end up with the two wider strikers getting pulled very wide and leaving one through the middle quite isolated.

I'd much rather see us revert to a 4-4-2 with one holding midfielder, one given license to get forward and two wide players. Up front you give two of our strikers a chance to get to know each other and form a partnership instead of chopping and changing personnel and systems from week to week.

I'd love to see that but I don't think we have the wide players to make it work. Beasley can play there and he has a bit of pace and trickery to make that work, but what about the other side? What if he picks up another injury? Then we're looking at wide players such as McCulloch, Miller, Lafferty, none of whom are suited to the wing, or Burke who just can't cut it.

I would say 4-3-3 with the wingbacks being slightly more cautious going forward, two sitting midfielders and one attacking to support three proper forwards.

But then I'm not a football manager.
