  1. O'Neill is keen on hit man Jelavic Martin O’Neill is weighing up a January transfer swoop for Nikica Jelavic. The new Sunderland manager is desperate to add firepower to his shot-shy side and Sportsmail understands the Rangers striker is high on his list of targets. With Nicklas Bendtner and Connor Wickham the only fit out-and-out strikers at the Stadium of Light, O’Neill has prioritised a new front man — and the Croatia international ticks all the boxes. It is unlikely Rangers would let their star man go for less than £7million and O’Neill must decide if he is prepared to spend the bulk of his January kitty — around £10m — on one player. O’Neill has a track record of plundering both halves of the Old Firm since leaving Celtic in 2005. As Aston Villa manager, he signed Shaun Maloney and Stilian Petrov from Celtic and went to Rangers to take Carlos Cuellar a year later. West Bromwich Albion, meanwhile, are also to the forefront of the chase for the 26-year-old, while Kenny Dalglish’s Liverpool have been linked with a move for the Ibrox icon. One major advantage for Roy Hodgson is the West Midlands side’s willingness to let Graham Dorrans move in the opposite direction to his boyhood heroes, which would solve one problem for Ally McCoist. While losing Jelavic would undoubtedly be a huge setback to Rangers’ hopes of retaining the SPL title, gaining an attacking midfielder would soften the blow. For their part, West Brom are the English Premiership’s joint-lowest scorers and badly need that to change to move away from the lower reaches of the table. Jelavic joined Rangers on a four-year deal from Rapid Vienna for £4m in 2010 and proved an instant hit, scoring 33 goals so far. 2. NEIL LENNON last night backed Celtic supporters not to chant pro-IRA songs ever again. Hoops fans will be under scrutiny from UEFA beaks in tonight's crucial Europa League clash with Udinese. Celtic were hit with a £13,000 fine earlier this week for 'illicit chanting' during last month's clash with Rennes. They've been warned future misconduct will lead to more serious punishment. Around 600 Hoops fans are expected to travel to Italy for tonight's must-win game. Boss Lennon said: "I think the fans will be on their best behaviour. Our away fans have been a credit to the club. "We just want to draw a line under things. We made our statement, accepted the fine and, whether people agree with it or not, we need to abide by it. We need to move on. "But I'm confident it will prove to be a one-off. "The fans since then have been very, very good in that respect. They self-police themselves." 7. New laws to tackle religious hatred and bigotry related to football have been passed by the Scottish Parliament, despite a lack of opposition support. The government bill aims to tackle the issue with jail terms of up to five years for behaviour which could cause public disorder in and around matches. But Labour, the Tories, Lib Dems and Greens said the case for new legislation had not been made. They want the problem addressed through greater use of existing law. The parties have also called on the government to work more closely with the Scottish football authorities, schools and communities. Despite opposition, the majority SNP government's Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Bill was passed by 64 votes to 57. The legislation, which has won backing from police and prosecutors, aims to stamp out abusive behaviour, whether fans are watching matches in a stadium, in the pub or commenting online. Earlier, about 20 football supporters wearing t-shirts bearing the slogan "fans not criminals" were excluded from the Holyrood chamber after parliament bosses told them they were only allowed in if they took them off. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-16138683

  11. The English Premier League club have made their move for the highly-rated Tannadice youngster, STV has learned. Dundee United have accepted a bid from West Bromwich Albion for midfielder Scott Allan. The 20-year old made his first team breakthrough this year and has been tracked by several clubs but West Brom have moved to the front of the queue after having a bid accepted by the Tannadice club, STV understands. Allan is now free to discuss terms with the English Premier League side and could make the switch to England when the transfer window opens in January. Newcastle United, Rangers and Celtic are all reported to have had an interest in the Scotland Under-21 star and it became apparent that he may be ready to quit Tannadice after talks over a new contract broke down in September. Allan's current deal expires in the summer and he would be free to talk to other clubs in January about an end of season move with United only receiving training compensation. Dundee United manager Peter Houston was openly critical of the player, saying at the time: "Scott has rejected our offer and I'm very disappointed. "He was offered the best deal this club has ever offered to a teenager but doesn't want it. "When it comes down to a 19-year-old demanding to be the third-highest paid player at the club after two-and-a-half games then I wouldn't pay him it even if I could afford it." Allan made his debut for United in a Europa League qualifier against Slask Wroclaw and played in six Scottish Premier League matches. However, he has not featured in the first team since October 29. http://sport.stv.tv/football/scottish-premier/dundee-united/287691-west-bromwich-albion-and-dundee-united-agree-scott-allan-fee/

  22. LEE McCULLOCH today tipped supersub Thomas Bendiksen to provide the creative spark which can help keep Rangers out in front of Old Firm rivals Celtic in the SPL title battle. Midfield anchorman â??Jigâ?? and his Gers team-mates have all been delighted to see skilful Norwegian starlet Bendiksen make the big breakthrough into the first team in recent weeks. The 22-year-old has endured a nightmare time with serious injuries since arriving in Scotland four years ago and is only now available for selection. He netted in a midweek friendly match with Bundesliga club SV Hamburg in Germany at the end of last month as his side ended up losing 2-1. Then, Light Blues boss Ally McCoist handed the youngster his first-ever competitive start in the 2-1 win over Dunfermline at Ibrox 11 days ago and he performed well. And, last Saturday, his arrival on the field in the second half sparked a definite upturn in fortunes for Rangers in a difficult league game against Hibs at Easter Road. Operating in the hole just behind lone striker Nikica Jelavic, the former Harstad IL player was involved in both of his teamâ??s strikes in the 2-0 victory. McCulloch, back in the team himself after regaining full fitness, believes those showings are just a taster of what is to come from a lad rated highly by the Murray Park youth coaches. â??Thomas is the kind of player Rangers are crying out for just now,â? said McCulloch. â??He plays off the cuff and that is exactly what we need at the moment. He has obviously got a bright future. He is one of these boys who you can give the ball to who will then go and make something happen. â??That showed with our first goal last Saturday against Hibs. He played a pass with the outside of his foot to Lee Wallace in a dangerous position. We were awarded a penalty and that got us on our way. â??I think he is an off-the-cuff kind of player and that is the sort of individual Rangers are crying out for just now, in my opinion. As long as he keeps his head down, he will get a chance. â??He has had terrible injuries in the past and has spent two of the four years he has been at the club on the sidelines. His kneecap went and that really set him back. â??But he is determined and he is confident, and those qualities have got him to the position where he is now challenging for a first-team place and is very much in the managerâ??s thoughts. â??He is desperate to get a game and I thought he did brilliantly when he started against Dunfermline 10 days ago and when he came on in the second half against Hibs at the weekend. Long may it continue.â? With Steven Naismith out injured for the rest of the season, McCoist is hopeful the youngster can provide his team with a cutting edge in the final third of the park in the second half of the campaign. In stark contrast, the Rangers boss has had few fears at the back thanks to the way new signings Carlos Bocanegra and Dorin Goian have gelled and performed at centre-half together. McCulloch has played in the middle of the rearguard in the past as injury cover, and appreciates how influential the United States and Romanian internationalists have been for his team. The 33-year-old also feels keeper Allan McGregor has once again been outstanding for Rangers as they bid to win the Clydesdale Bank Premier League for the fourth season running. The Scotland man had come in for criticism during the last few months for some uncharacteristic blunders in league games against Celtic at Ibrox and Aberdeen at Pittodrie. But neither of McGregorâ??s surprising slip-ups have cost his side the results they were looking for â?? and McCulloch believes his heroics between the sticks have been absolutely vital. Indeed, he produced a typical moment of magic in Edinburgh last weekend when he palmed a dipping Paul Hanlon shot which had been deflected off the outstretched leg of Steven Whittaker over his crossbar. â??Thatâ??s the type of goalie he is,â? McCulloch remarked as he continued preparations for the league game with Inverness Caledonian Thistle at Ibrox this Saturday. â??There are so many games where he produces a really important save which ensures that we take home all three points. â??Very often, Greegsy only has one save to make in a game. But, when he makes it, you can see he is a world-class player. The weekend was a case in point. He stopped Hibs coming back into the match. â??It is all credit to him and to his attitude in training and in games. The boys are delighted with the way he has been performing once again this season. Nobody was in the slightest bit bothered by the so-called mistakes he made. â??These things happen from time to goalkeepers, even top players like Allan. Hopefully, he will continue to play in the same vein of form. He has been a huge player for us in the past â?? and he will be again this season.â? http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/sport/there-s-just-no-doubting-thomas-can-be-jewel-in-ally-mccoist-crown-1.1139738

  24. RANGERS player Maurice Edu had his luxury Range Rover impounded by cops yesterday. The American midfielder was pulled over on his way to training after traffic officers allegedly spotted himusing his mobile phone behind the wheel. And after examining the Gers starâ??s licence, they immediately confiscated the white 4x4. As a result, it is understood Edu was more than an hour late for training and had to be dropped off at Murray Park, in Milngavie, near Glasgow, by his partner. American citizens are allowed to drive in the UK on their US licence for 12 months. But after that, they are legally required to have a UK licence. That means the driver has to apply for a provisional licence and then pass a driving test. Edu, 25, has lived in Scotland since the summer of 2008 when former Rangers boss Walter Smith signed him from Toronto FC for £2.7million. The player was last night unavailable for comment. A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: â??Around 10.25am, police officers stopped a car on Crow Road, Glasgow. â??As a consequence, the 25-year-old male driver will now be the subject of a report to the procurator fiscal in connection with alleged road traffic offences.â? http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/2011/12/14/rangers-star-maurice-edu-has-luxury-range-rover-impounded-by-police-as-he-drives-to-training-86908-23633748/
