Now that Tuesday night's events have had the chance to be digested, just how bad are we ?

By that I mean was Tuesday a real shocker or was it waiting to happen ? What bearing does it have in the context of our season ?

Yes, it was a horrific performance. Yes, the players showed no desire or will. Yes it was humiliating and embarassing. One of the worst nights as a Rangers fan.

But, in the grander context are we that bad ?

I will try to explain.....

At the start of the season many of us looked at the Champions league as a bonus as we knew we didnt really have a squad capable of competing against the upper echelons of European football.

We then drew Sevilla, Stuttgart and Unirea - this gave us reasonable hope that we could qualify out of this group, and rightly so.

We know we havent been playing well of late and there are a number of reasons for that. BUT we are still top of the league and, if our original thought at the start of the season was that the CL was a bonus then results there don't matter, right ?

Things are bad right now due to some inept performances (players AND management) but they would be a whole lot worse if Celtic had been consistently winning games and looking far better than us, which thankfully they are not.

I guess what I am getting at is that if the CL was a bonus then Tuesday's result shouldn't make too much of a difference to us (the performance is another question altogether).

My fear is that the types of result and performance that we saw on Tuesday night can eliminate ALL confidence a team has (and, lets be honest, ours was running on empty in this regard as it was) and that this "dip in form" could in fact become our norm rather than an exception.

Things are bad, real bad at our club from top to bottom. But we do still have all domestic competition to fight for - the club, management, players AND fans need to realise this before the wheels come off that particular wagon too.

It is imperative that we win the SPL again this year and despite how bad things are, despite how lost our management seem to be and despite how inept the performances on the pitch are, we DO need to get behind the team and we DO need to show them we support the club & team through thick and thin and that we CARE about what is going on.

Hopefully the management and players also care but that remains to be seen, and hopefully we will see it on Saturday with a convincing win against Hibs.

Apparently we're just too chuck it when it's going bad as the current crop aren't up to Rangers standards. Supporting the team through thick and thin is seen as defeatist by too many.

It is downright disgusting when the players appear to have chucked it, but can you have any right for complaint when as a fan you do the same?

We all know there's no loyalty from players in the modern era, but it's a sad day from the game when there is also no loyalty from the core fans.

Scottish football is heading backwards, and Rangers and Celtics recent runs to UEFA cup finals along with Walter Smiths and Alex McLeishs tenures as Scotland managers have papered over some seriously glaring cracks. Or perhaps we're not moving backwards as such, more treading water while everyone else progress's.

Is it the fact that the rest of Scottish football is dragging Rangers and Celtic down, or is it the fact that the Old Firm duopoly is to the detrement of Scottish football and in particular the SPL?

What do the other teams in the SPL realistically aspire to? 3rd place in the SPL. Hell the vast majority of the teams in the SPL are just happy to finish top 6 for a little extra prize money and another game against each of the Old Firm. With 'lofty' ambitions such as that is it any wonder the SPL is in touble??

Unfortunately being the best of this bad bunch obviously doesn't cut it when it comes to playing in the European arena. Some may think we're getting paranoid and this is a knee jerk reaction to the game on Tuesday. But heres the facts people. Since the game in Lyon when we won 3-0 and we were all pretty much shocked and stunned by the results, how many games in Europe have we played? 18. And how many have we won? 2.

Our record in those last 18 games is won 2, drawn 8, lost 8. So realistically why did we expect to win on Tuesday with a European record like that???

We are awful, from tactics to players attitudes. From The boardroom to the 3rd sub.

There are some lights in the darkness, but they are far too few and far between.

Scottish football and the league is holding us back. If we leave it with the Dhims Scottish football would nosedive further.

It is a no win situation for all, and it will get worse.
