Rangers midfielder Pedro Mendes has reiterated his desire to join Sporting Lisbon in the January transfer window.

The no-nonsense Portuguese midfielder has been tipped to leave Ibrox to help ease the club's crippling debt mountain.

Sporting have been linked with a bid for the ex-Portsmouth man, but as yet no fee has been agreed with the SPL giants.

Mendes, like everyone else, is awaiting news on his future, stating only that he would find it difficult to reject Sporting.

"I am awaiting news on what might happen," he told the Scottish Sun.

"It would be difficult to reject a move to Sporting because I am Portuguese and this move could have a big influence on my family life."

Mendes would have no qualms seeing out the remaining 18 months on his contract, but is leaving the door on his future open.

"It's not the first time I've been asked about this but I can't confirm anything," he continued.

"I'm leaving the door open to hear offers that may interest me and the club."

I like him in our midfield but if it suits us finanally by freeing up some £ for other contract extensions, then fair enough.

I believe we can cope with davis playing in the middle.

Indeed.

An example of the 'trading' our new chairman mentioned at the club AGM last month...

It does emphasise our recent downsizing when the fans are content with big name players leaving in the hope of it financing new contracts for other players. Still, we have so many players out of contract at the end of next season (Alexander, Papac, Wilson, McCulloch, Thomson, Fleck, Miller), not to mention the ones we are currently negotiating with, that it is becoming a necessity to think that way

Winning the SPL and qualifying for the CL Group Stage once more would allow us a bit more flexibility in terms of new players I think.

A new owner by then would also help but even if the debt is eradicated in any takeover; I can't see the new guy(s) wanting to make the same mistakes as their predecessor by spending upwards of £10million on players anytime soon.

I'd just be content with an owner who removed our 'selling club' reputation. I don't want a return to the days of £5 million transfer fees and £30,000 wages but i'd like to feel less terrified every time the transfer window rolls around lol. This is McGeady's 6th season as a first team regular at Celtic, if he played for Rangers he would've been sold after 3 at most. That's what really annoys me about the present (or are they now past?) regime

Every club is a selling club nowadays unfortunately but I agree with need to improve the business to make it efficient enough that we don't need to sell important players unless absolutely necessary.

As for Celtic not selling McGeady, that's a combination of regular European/CL participation as well as clubs not being seriously interested in a seriously inconsistent player. I believe he will move on this summer though - especially if Celtic don't secure the title as they'll then need the ~£5million to service their debt.
