RANGERS fear losing Danny Wilson for next to nothing after contract talks collapsed.

SunSport can reveal Gers have been told the 18-year-old won't pen a new deal.

Liverpool target Wilson, a frontrunner to be Young Player of the Year, is out of contract next summer.

We revealed three months ago that the centre half had turned down an extension on improved terms.

We also revealed last month that Liverpool had moved ahead of Aston Villa, Spurs and Manchester City in the race to land Wilson.

Contract talks between Wilson's agent David Manasseh and Gers chief executive Martin Bain restarted recently.

And boss Walter Smith outlined his desire for the home-grown stopper to re-sign.

But Ibrox chiefs have now given up hope of keeping Wilson beyond his present contract.

Gers have already held talks with Liverpool over a possible summer deal for the defender.

But if Wilson stays until the end of his contract, Gers would only receive a nominal sum for developing him.

A source close to Wilson last night admitted that two planned meetings between Manasseh and Bain had NOT taken place.

He said the youngster could still sign an extension but SunSport understands Ibrox bosses have already resigned themselves to losing out on the kid.

Please God this doesn't happen. If we lose youngsters of this quality this early then we might as well compete at first division level. No transfers and no youth policy.

Problem is - we can't make players sign new contracts if they don't want to.

Of course we should try our very best to ensure they stay by offering competitive (though affordable) contracts and ensuring the organisation of the club isn't as chaotic as it is now but if a player wants to leave, then they'll leave.

As such, IF the story is true, we should now sell him for as much money as we can to ensure we have a suitable replacement.

I don't believe the rumours that Liverpool would buy him and loan him back to us for a season. Can't see that happening to be honest.

He'll go if we receive an offer of anything close to £3m.

I think Smith (or Bain) has already said the loan-back thing isn't an option...

Wilson is a fantastic talent but if he doesn't want to stay, then accept a good offer (several teams are interested so the price should be good) and ensure the income is used to buy another defender.

Not ideal in terms of continuity but C'est la vie

In a time when agents rule the football world, as soon as you have interest from far richer clubs who pay far higher wages, a young player will turn towards instant wealth before considering the long term consequences.

There's nothing like filthy lucre to take a player's mind of winning medals in a declining, almost backwater league.

If Liverpool are in then we just can't afford him anymore; ironically it's exactly what we used to do when we had money - buy up all the promising players by offering them more money than their current club could afford.

There are many reasons he may wish to leave tbh.

The 'improved' deal might be better than a youth player gets but not in line with what a first team regular gets - and he is now clearly a first team player.

He might also be concerned that no matter how he plays, he will always be ditched for a senior player.

Just because he hasn't signed a new deal does not mean he doesn't want to stay. It just means the deal hasn't yet been agreed on and we don't know the full story.
