Cuellar offer accepted?

Recommended Posts

Is he even fit? I know he is a great asset but we still need fit players for the first few weeks etc.

According to what I've been able to find out from Villa sites he's about 2 weeks away from resuming training, so no, he's not fit yet. Still working to get back from injury.

Villa fans are not fucking happy about this news btw! Almost all of them to a man are going to be seriously pissed off if they sell him for £2m. Most Villa fans think he's their best defender. He was offered a new 3 year deal at Villa twice in the past season but was reluctant to sign up unless he knew he would get regular games.

I'm not trying to put a dampner on things here, but I can't for the life of me see how we're going to be able to offer him a high enough salary to lure him back when he's been getting offered new deals off Villa. Muchos Respectos to the guy if he comes back to us and takes a huge wage cut.

Yeah have to agree I would love this to happen but I am in no way getting excited. Hopefully wages won't be an issue and Carlos craves champions league football. Let's see how this one pans out but right at this time I am expecting another kick in the balls.

ASTON Villa last night cleared the way for Carlos Cuellar’s return to Ibrox.

The Premiership side finally agreed to sell after Rangers increased their bid to Ã?£2million. But although Villa have accepted, everything now depends on the Spaniard’s willingness to take a severe cut in wages.

It is understood Cuellar is on just more than Ã?£40,000 a week down south but Rangers won’t pay much more than half of that. It is likely Cuellar would have to accept Ã?£25,000 a week but that would still make him one of the highest-paid players at Ibrox.

While Villa finally relented on Rangers’ bid for Cuellar, Espanyol have thrown out the Ibrox club’s offer for Raul Rodriguez.

Sporting director Ramon Planes said Gers’ initial bid of Ã?£400,000 for the defender didn’t meet their valuation.

He said: “The bid Rangers made for Raul was insufficient. It is not acceptable. We believe in Raul, he is a young player who hasn’t played a lot of games. He’s one for the future.”

Kenny Miller is another player on Rangers’ radar and he’ll also have to accept a massive pay cut before returning to Ibrox.

Last night Rangers’ director of football Gordon Smith said: “There are two aspects we need to understand. Firstly, is he available and is he available at a price we would pay?

“And is he willing to look at the wage structure in Scottish football as opposed to Turkish football?

“If he comes back here it would not be on the same sort of basis financially.”

Cuellar arrived at Ibrox from Osasuna in 2007 but was transferred to Villa for £7.8m after only a year.

Alex McLeish was reluctant to part with the central defender and slapped a £3m price tag on his head. But last night he and Villa relented.

Rangers had offered Ã?£1.5m a couple of weeks ago but with the loss of six goals in three matches on tour in Germany highlighting the team’s defensive frailties the bid was increased.

Ally McCoist has made no secret of the fact he sees Cuellar as the player he’d like to see form a defensive alliance with Madjid Bougherra.

It is believed the Algerian is now willing to sign a new contract while Steve Davis is also close to a new deal.

Smith said: “We’ve offered Davis an extension to his contract and we’re hoping we get that completed.

“We are just waiting to finalise it.”

News of Villa opening the way for Cuellar’s return and Bougherra’s change of heart will be a relief to Rangers fans growing concerned at the lack of transfer activity.

As he left Germany, McCoist promised signings within the next week.

Carlos must surely be already aware of the Ibrox pay structure.

And we should be aware of what wage he wants.

If the fee has been agreed, we need to push this through at the earliest opportunity - no matter if the guy is fit or not.
