Rangers could still add to squad

By Chick Young

Jelavic was signed by Rangers from Rapid Vienna on Friday

Rangers' £4m capture of Nikica Jelavic might not be the Scottish champions' last piece of business before the closure of the transfer window.

Walter Smith had said before the Croatia striker's arrival from Rapid Vienna that there were no more funds.

But it is understood that there is still further money for the manager to use if he wishes to strengthen the squad before the transfer deadline.

Until this summer, he had not signed a player for more than two years.

Debts of more than £30m meant that Lloyds Banking Group had forced the club to implement severe cutbacks, especially in player wages.

However, figures are expected to be announced in the next month or two that will show that Rangers have wiped out a substantial amount of their debt.

Rangers have achieved this by major cuts in their playing staff and such items as cleaning bills and maintenance.

The summer departures of Kris Boyd and Kevin Thompson to Middlesbrough, Nacho Novo to Sporting Gijon and Stevie Smith to Norwich City have also reduced the wage bill.

In addition, a transfer fee was paid by Boro for midfielder Thompson.

Unlike most clubs, who have bought players in instalments, Rangers have paid up front and therefore do not have such a burden.

Rangers will also benefit from city rivals Celtic's failure to reach the Champions League group stages.

Because the national pot would have been split between the competing clubs, Rangers will not now have to share a likely £10m purse from their participation in Europe's premier club tournament.

All that means that Smith, who has been claiming about a lack of depth and experience in his squad, still has a limited amount to spend should he feel he requires to add to his squad.

Jelavic became Rangers' most expensive purchase in eight years when he completed his move from the Austrian club on Friday.

Rangers had already recruited fellow striker James Beattie from Stoke City and winger Vladimir Weiss, who arrived on loan from Manchester City.

The Kurier is probably as bad as the Sun or the Daily Record over in Rangers lands. Sportsnet took it on from there and you could have picked Scotzine for a similar accurate report. Essentially, it looks to be exactly what I expected to happen when the press started highlighting our "tax problems". Hence I asked for the club to sue those who leaked this information, as it is bound to damage our reputation. Anyway, here it goes ...

Jelavic: Rapid waits for the Rangers-cash.

A tax-compensation and a dubious owner give concern to the Hüttelsdorfer (an alias for Rapid).

The daily paper "Kurier" reports that Rapid has to wait somewhat longer for the full payment of the transfer of Nikica Jelavic.

The part-payment of Euro 500k due on August 31st will come later than agreed, as will future payments. According to "Kurier", the new owner - billionaire Craig Whyte - declines to take on the liabilities and Rangers also have to pay a tax-compensation of Euro 33m.

The manager (i.e. chairman) of Rapid, Werner Kuhn, has been informed by the Scots, but did not give any further comment. "For it is a detail of the contract and silence about the latter had been agreed."

See, the Austrians already know that we have to pay ...

At the time it was said that we paid in full. I would assume that we paid a certain amount up front and - as is usual these days - additional sums at set dates. Nothing strange these days, just remember that cash-rich (you would expect) Liverpool does the same with Wilson. (Even though his money was tied on appearances et al - which is the worse deal, IMHO.) Yet, with us it is all just assumptions and hearsay, born out of the rumours regarding the tax bills and law case. As I said on the time, this will grow arms and legs unless it is checked early on. We will have to counter any silly rumour uttered by the press or on a Hooped Horror board ... and all this see our reputation suffer.

On a sidenote, while Bain's papers may claim this or that, I would assume that he knows next to nothing about the way Whyte handles Rangers' finances and payments these days. If you consider that money was there to finance the various deals which did not come off (Goodwillie, Verhoek, Juhasz ... ) and don't follow the rather hysterical assumption that this was all a bluff to appease the fans, I for one can't understand why people think we are in monetary difficulties. Of course, the current actions by HMRC make us look a bit stupid, but shouldn't we have the right to contest bills we deem irregular? It's what every company this side of Saturn's ring does .. and usually isn't questioned for it.
